When upgrading an AR 15 from a commercial BCG to a Mil-Spec unit from BCM, is it truly just a straight swap out? Are there any pitfalls to doing this, especially if the upgraded AR will have a commercial buffer tube? Will the commercial tube have issues handling the heavier BCG? Are there any caveats?

Yes, it's a simple swap.

As long as you're dropping quality parts into a quality rifle, you shouldn't have any issues. I doubt that you've put enough rounds through the rifle to cause any uneven wear that would affect the swap.

Are there any pitfalls to doing this,

If you have a high round count upper and you put in a new BCG you may experience some sticking as the friction areas will not match perfectly. Usually only happens in pretty well used uppers.

Even then, the new BCG will usually wear into the old path pretty quickly.
