NcSTAR Scopes

anyone have experience with Millett, BSA, Truglo, or Barska?

I have a Millett TRS-1 on my long range rifle. I have NO desire for a more expensive scope. It is very clear, bright, and the adjustments are very nice and repeatable. it also has a huge range of adjustment. They are guaranteed to have 60 minutes of elevation but most have around 100 so shooting from 0 to 1000 yards us usually possible without an elevated mount. The only drawback is that it is a LARGE scope. But it works great.

The scope was recommended to me by a High Power Rifle shooter. He, and the guys he was with, generally use Nightforce or expensive scope but recommended the Millett as a good lower cost option.

where would be a good place to look? for the ruskie stuff?

I haven't owned one, but I've had to put up with the annoying conversations from my friends who did. The annoying conversations were usually of two sorts:

1. Look at my new scope! It's just like your *insert quality Red Dot here*, except I only spent $19.99! You're an idiot for wasting your money! Ha ha ha ha! This thing is great!

2. This scope sucks! What a hunk of junk! They shouldn't be allowed to sell knock-off hunks of crap like this, I'm going to write a strongly worded email/call the better business bureau/try to deal with the Customer Service Dept. I'm so angry, but it's OK. This convinced me to bite the bullet and buy a Tasco.

2 usually follows 1, and is usually the jumping off point for repeating the whole process.

This is an old thread, but it deserves to be said that NCStar are amongst the worst optics on the market. I agree with lipadj46 (post no. 5) and would only like to add that Vortex is also a very good option (save for the Crossfire series which isn't too bad, but not up to the standard set by their other optics).

I've had my NcStar scout scope on my Marlin for 2 years and have fired plenty of rounds thew it........LOVE IT and don't plan on changeing it any time soon..................None of the deer seem to notice that there standing in the cross hairs on my NcStar scope untill the bullet hits.

I like the laser on the Ncstar for night time Jack rabbit popping. Anyone know of a better quality scope with laser that has a functional on/off switch? Yea I know... buy a good scope and add a laser on the rails.....Geez everything is so complicated. If stuff worked like advertised we would all be better off!

Yep, from my experience most scopes that come with accessories (including rings, et al) are not of good quality. Best to buy a good quality scope (Sightron, Vortex [excluding Crossfire series], Bushnell Elite series, Nikon, Zeiss, Meopta, Leupold [VX-II and above], et cetera) and add a laser to it (or preferably to the forearm rails if applicable). Even Leapers Accushot and Centerpoint is well above NCStar's (as well as BSA, Barska, and Tasco) level of quality (or lack thereof).

Found one of the Ruskies for $199. Would not mind having a good 3 to 5 hundred yard scope that would work with my eyes. I tell you black rifle fever is a killer!

Last nights shooting experience with the Ncstars (2 on ARs) was less than a total waste of time. Finally had to get the night scope out and put the Ncstars away before I did a foot stomping dance on both of them.
Before sunset checked the zero on both and had to adjust one slightly and the other one like it had never been zeroed. One of the lasers was 4 ft low and to the right from the cross-hairs. Got the rounds on paper and target then left to pop Jack Rabbits. First shot laser blinked out and could "only" be turned back on by cycling the reticle knob. This happened 4 times. Put the gun up and got the other AR scope gun combo. Zero was off with scope and had same problem with laser. Up to this point I had not had any problems with the scopes other than the mounting screw on the quick disconnect coming lose. Both Scopes have been removed from the guns and shall be placed either in a box for return to Ncstar or given to a 4 year old girl and a 6 year old boy to play with/destroy..

Sorry that you had to find out the hard way, just be glad that you found out now, not on a shot that really counted (hunting or worse a SD situation). My above recommendations stand, if you are in need of a suitable (reliable) replacement. Better to save up and buy something worthwhile than spend the same (or more [gasp]) amount spread out over a longer period of time buying poor quality optics.

Some cheap optics seem to work well, others seem to be total junk.

I have a $90 dollar Walther PS-55 on my AR that works great, and my God son has a cheapo BSA RD-30 that has given excellent range service on his Hi Point 995 9mm carbine. Both are home defense guns that won't spend any time in the field.

But i've also had all kinds of problems in the past with cheapo optics of various brands.

Virtually everything i've read about NCStar optics is that they're absolute junk.

I tried 3 times to give nc star a chance. never again.
Now for my own saying, " if it says bsa, then run away!!" except their
redots can be pretty good.
Barska; I have had 3, and a fourth was bad out of the box, but the other 3 have been good-- a little rough and unpolished around the edges, but clear, repeatable to zero, reliable, etc. I still have two. I would look at two model barskas, their tactical version scope, and their longrange/varmint version, which is a Tasco Varmint clone. Otherwise, if you can spend a tad more money on a scope, the best values dollar for dollar are in no particular order--
mueller
vortex
viper
Weaver
nikon
pentax
nikko sterling. All the scopes above can be had for between 100 and 200
bucks; they also come , many of them, with lifetime wrntys.
the millet mentioned above, is also good, and not too expensive.

I bought one hoping that I could at least use it for shooting cans. No luck, the thing is when you hold it it seems to be ok, solid, clear to look through but there is so much more to a scope.

I have a NcStar 4x32 LER that I've used on my .357mag Ruger Blackhawk and my M-48 Yugo Mauser. It workes great on the Ruger and the jury's still out on how it works on the Mauser.

NC Star = junk

Vortec red dot on carry handle AR is working good. Just got the Ncstars back from the factory and are still in the box. Dunno what I am going to do with them; have gone a different direction with the ARs.
