S&W Model 27 classic?

To be honest, the 27 is a large N frame gun and is rather heavy.
I know my wife would pick it up and put it right back down due to the weight alone.
Woman are more picky with their guns than guys. That's a FACT.
If a woman walks in our shop to buy a gun, I'll know by her face with-in 2 seconds if it's going to work for her.
I agree with you on the entire revolver thing. So did my wife once I explained the simple facts between the semi-auto and the basic revolver.
Making sure the semi is loaded, making sure there's one in the chamber and so on. In a pressure situation, my wife would end up throwing the semi at the bad guys.
My wife owns 2 guns, a Springfield XD and a polished S&W model 66 snubbie.
Her XD sits in one of my safes and never sees daylight, while the 66 is loaded and ready to rock all day every day and she knows right where it is. She also shoots it in DA and shoots it quite well.
If a woman likes her gun, she won't be afraid of it.
If it does not feel good to her, she'll never even want to touch it.
Unless you have a large wife, she's not going to like the 27 classic.
My wifes gun looks like the one pictured below. I put a set of custom finger groove badger grips on hers and she loves the feel of the grips and the looks of the gun.
I would say you need to find something smaller for your wife other than that heavy 27.

I too think a Mod 27 is to big for a woman. My favorite S&W's were always the mod 19 and 66 because of the way they fit my hand. For a woman maybe even a mod 60 would be a good choice as they have smaller hands.

You would be wise to let her choose the gun.

Gunkwazy makes a lot of sense.The medium framed guns such as the 10,12,14,19,& 66s are a great place to start.
While the 27 is a wonderful gun, it is BIG.

Sounds like you've got a hankerin' for a Model 27! That's all well and good, but trying to acquire it through your wife might just end up in misery for both of you.

N Frames can work for women, certainly. But one's fingers must be long enough to comfortably reach and squeeze the trigger. N Frames have quite a long reach for shorter fingered folks. Heck, my wife can just barely reach the trigger on a smaller K Frame.

I assume this isn't a CCW piece. If not, she can focus on all-steel guns for recoil absorption. Steel S&W J and K frames, Ruger SP101s and Security/Police Service/Speed Sixes and a host of Taurus revolvers are all options.

I would let her make the decision. Let her handle several diffenent sizes of revolvers. I have to agree with others that the K frame S&W or a Ruger Security Six might be the ticket. But again, I would let her decide. As far as ammo goes, let her get used to shooting 38 special before she guaduates to the magnum round.

My friend's daughter is 12. She enjoyed shooting my 19-3 with Ahrends grips and light .38 Special. My 25 Classic was too big for her.

I certainly agree that she needs to be a big part of the decision on what to get. Besides, it may be fun to go around and try out lots of options. And shooting a couple of different K frame guns should certainly be part of this. And some J frames. And yes, even an N frame or two just to try them out. Along the way some of the dastardly semis should be tossed in.

When the dust and smoke settle see which ones she felt the most comfortable with and shot the best. Then go shopping for that size and frame in a style she wants.

You could get her a Model 48 in .22 magnum. That would handle the recoil issue and the .48 is a K frame. But again, let her choose her own gun.

Don't forget a S&W Mountain gun

Something like a S&W 625 in its various 45 ACP or 45 LC might work.
Less weight due to bigger holes.
Mountain guns have lighter barrels.
A 45 is a pretty good defense gun and it has much less blast and noise then a .357.

Take a look at the 3" S&W Model 60 with fiber-optic sight. Great gun for a woman. $584 at Bud's.

What ever you do let her pick her own gun. How would you like it if someone told you what you should be shooting?

I still think your on the right path, a 2.5" or 3" K frame revolver will probably be the best choice but the choice MUST be hers!
