I got a call from my friend the other day. He said his Mossberg 835 barrel had some kind of sludge in it that wouldn't come out. He dropped it off and I said I would get it out and bring it back to him.

This gunk is the worst fouling I have ever seen. It is in the middle of the barrel, covering the entire inside diameter over a 8" long section. It looks like someone went crazy with black silicone or caulk. It's thick, probably around 1/8-3/16 in some places. Very irregular shape. Over the course of an hour, 3 different cleaners, and lord knows how many brush strokes, it came clean. It came out in small chunks, none over 1/2" long. It had a rubbery texture, and was completely black.

I checked the bore that the gunk was covering up. No pits, no damage....just bright, smooth metal.

This build-up had accumulated in less than 30 rounds. It is not a new gun, but he was firing new shells through it. I believe he was shooting Hevi-metal non-toxic shot for duck hunting. I know it was raining opening morning, and he had water in his barrel from carrying it muzzle up.

So what is this stuff? If it was powder residue, the Hoppes should have taken it right out. I don't think plastic fouling gets that crazy, but I may be wrong. We are completely stumped.

It would about have to be plastic wad fouling.

Next time, break out the cordless drill.
Put a bronze bore brush on the rod, and chuck it in the drill.
Then Gofer It!

You could even add a wrap of 0000 Extra Fine steel wool to the brush if needed.
It won't hurt the barrel, and might in fact polish the rough barrel a little and stop it from fouling in the future.

I had to clean out a barrel that was really hideous. I wound up putting a green ScotchBrite piece around a 20 ga jag and working it by hand. Took a while but the end result was beautiful. I followed it up with 4x0 steel wool to polish it up, as suggested above.

I would start by spraying the inside with your basic brake cleaner - that solvent will clean just about anything - it DOES remove all lubrication, so be sure and relube any parts as necessary. I use it to immediately get the wad buildup out of my choke tubes......THEN hit it with the brush in the cordless drill, then with a clean patch around that brush and you should have a mirror finish

We will be watching it closely to see if it happens again, and with what ammo. Thanks for the info guys.

Have a little patience and the job will be much easier.

Spray some "Break Free" in it and let it sit overnight. The next day the plastic will be curled up inside the barrel and can be removed with just a cloth patch.

Mossbergs are noted for having a very heavy coating inside the barrel from the factory. Cleaning a new 835 will present you with an amazining amout of gunk. Clean it, coat the bore with a good solvent (Butches, hoppes #9) let it sit a day or two, bust it up with a bronze brush and finish with cotton swabs and CLP. Remember the 835 has a 10 Ga bore, 12 ga brushes and swabs will not really scrub it. If you can find 10ga brushes and swabs the job will be much more thorough (or use 2 patches on a 12 ga brush). Clean it a week later and you will probably get out more dirt! once cleaned and lubed with CLP or Kroil it will be good to go for a long time. :D

I tried wrapping a 12 ga brush with a patch soaked in #9. Also tried CLP and gunscrubber. However, I did not let it sit for an extended period of time. This is all good information. I should be well armed next time I come across something like this.

I'm sure glad I read this thread

My Mossberg 930 has this exact problem. I had tried a 12 gauge brush and Shooters Choice bore cleaner to clean the barrel and after the 10th cleaning I'm still getting dirty patches out.

I was running clean patches over the wire brush and the dark color would just not go away and had given up.

Time to give it an overnight ( or two ), soaking in CLP.

Thanks all,

TK

A Green Scotch Brite pad attached to a rod, a bit of breakfree, and a power drill will clean bores really good.
I also use this setup to polish the rough spots out of bores.

I have found that 0000 steel wool does not clean as well as the Scotchbrite.
