Ok guys i have a chance to make an offer on one of these. I looked at it today and it hasent been fired in ages. I noticed that it was lacking the rear adjustable sight but everything else in in good condition. It has the roman numeral 3 by the trigger guard and I know this tells us how significant it is. how much would it cost to get a rear sight and what do you think I should offer him.

I wouldn't offer more than 150 w/out a rear sight. If it's missing that, that means there may be other issues...I'd check it out pretty thoroughly

No offense, but there's not really enough info to comment on. There are many types of Enfields. Has it been "sporterized"? Bore condition? If you do a search, you can find lots of photos that should help ID the one you are looking at buying.

Pictures would be best, and more description is definitely needed. Can you at least identify if it's a No. 1 or No. 4 model?

I don't know how much peep sights generally go for, but I did a quick scan on one of the sites I generally go to for handloading components, and they had some there for around 60 dollars.

berettaman,

Which model Lee Enfield? The roman numeral III (3) may mean it is a No1 Mk3 or SMLE. Nothing wrong with that. They are interesting rifles and you end up with a real piece of history. Many of them have seen quite a bit of service and are worn but still shoot OK. You can get a new rear sight for just about any Lee Enfield from "Gunpartscorp" on the internet.

Sounds like you have a #4mk1 Enfield. There are markings on the butt stock socket on the left side that will tell exactly the manufacturer.

Here are the rear sights on some of my #4's. Does yours look like these:

Look like these (Savage's):

Here are the different backsights.

$20 to $40 bucks with exception for rare ones, a 1940 LB backsight can fetch over $300.
A No4 in good condition can run $200-$250. You say it's missing the backsight, no "ladder" style and a flip sight or just the sight is missing?

Check places like Brownell's, Marstar, and other Enfield parts suppliers. A sight can be found at not too bad of a price. Also check Gunbroker, GunsAmerica, ebay, etc. Bottom line: buy the rifle [even if you haven't said which Enfield it is] and you can get the parts to get it back in shape.
