Showing my buddy this site and all the great advice, he now wants to build a classical SBS. He said no pump actions. Not sure if he wants a double barrel or single? He definitely does not and won't cut up a nice shotgun. Any thoughts?

Stamp for sure.. 10"? I saw a guys pic on here a while back that was a Rossi? Something like that... Cheap and reliable, he doesn't want to kill a nicer gun..

You need a $200 tax stamp & registration if you cut it less then 18" barrel & 26" OAL.

NFA Federal Law, 18 U.S.C. § 921(a)(3)(B):
(6) The term "short-barreled shotgun'' means a shotgun having one
or more barrels less than eighteen inches in length and any weapon made
from a shotgun (whether by alteration, modification or otherwise) if
such a weapon as modified has an overall length of less than twenty-six
inches

I think if I were to do one,..I'd do an old H&R or NEF ssingle barrel break action. They have an ejector that will "plonk-eject" a fired hull backwards for a reload with considerable authority ......

Used to know an old deputy many years ago that had one in 12 gauge. T'was one wicked shooter.....a real hoot to shoot.

Thanks, I am very aware of the law and the stamp required! The Stoeger is $400! That's an expensive hack!

I hacked an old NEF single barrel. Fun to shoot and makes a great jump gun! Taken many rabbits and flushing birds with it!

And as thunder said, will plonk out the emptys for fast reloading

If just wanting it for fun go with a stamp but for defense I'd still say stay at 16", just because of how court will look at it. Too many people hate the evil gun owner protecting their home and family.

Then ya might want to stick with a stock barrel,....or at least 18+ inches..... 16 inches would be illegal without the stamp.....

There are enough recent imports in good mechanical and fair cosmetic condition, far cheaper.

Surf the auction sites. Also the Baikal Bounty Hunter may be found at 20" with screw-in chokes, sometimes with ejectors and single selective trigger.

I vote for a SxS over a single.

I personally wouldnt do it with anything under the 400-500 dollar mark. There is no way i could talk myself into paying 200 bucks for a tax stamp for a 100 dollar gun... by the same logic, i would not put a suppressor on a single shot NEF or Rossi rifle... would it work? of course, but why?

Also, if you want something "classic" then pump or double is the way to go. he may be better off buying an NEF pardner pump (Rem 870 clone) for 200 bucks new and cutting away.

16" barrel and 32" overall is perfectly legal. He said sawed off never mentioned a pistol grip.

My bad sorry you both are correct my apologies, been a long day. I've been making guide guns at work for the past 3 days, 16" is just stuck on the brain.

It's one of those knit 1 purl 2 knit 1 purl 2 knit 1 purl 3 knit 1 purl.....crap!

I'm also looking for the exact same thing right now and today I found a very good condition Stevens 311 for $275 but he'll take $250. The only thing that kept me from taking it home today is the stock and fore grip seem like their made of plastic. Did they even use plastic on shotguns back when these were manufactured?? I was all set to get a Stoeger until I found out their made in Brazil and serviced in Taurus repair center. I like to buy American and don't get me started on Tarus customer service :). What about those Century Arms coach guns at Big 5 that actually have exposed hammers anybody have any experiance with them? I know their made overseas but their only like $250 and don't look to bad. I actually really like the exposed hammers to be honest.

Didn't say I would personally buy one but was curious as to if they are complete junk or not. Not to mention that could be helpful info for the OP at that price and he never specified if buying overseas copies bothered him or not. Hey thanks for contributing something productive to the topic at hand though....
