When I was a young teen in 1967, the only shotgun I had access to was an old Stevens break open single barrel in 16 gauge. It was choked FULL and I missed more than I could hit with it. One morning in Jr. High home room I was complaining to my buddy about this shotgun. Our conversation was overheard by our Shop Teacher. He offered to "fix it" for me. He told me to get an OK from my Dad.

I talked to my Dad about it and he said go ahead. So next day I brought my un-loaded shotgun to school on the bus (in a case). No kidding!! My shop teacher cut the barrel to 22 inches on the lathe and re-fitted the bead. After that, my shooting improved tremendously!!

A "sawed off" shotgun barrel is useful for more things than home defense. The open patterns certainly helped me on running rabbits and moving squirrels.

Wow, times sure have changed. Try that today, you'd be in jail and the teacher would get fired.

Fun story. Wish we lived in simpler times when this could still happen.

I made a new stock in sophomore shop class 4 my J C Higgins bolt action 16ga back in 1970...Brought the cased gun to school on a county bus in Milwaukee and took it home the same way.....times have changed 4 sure

Whatever happened to the Stevens??? Hope you still know where it is.

I'm not calling you old, but my grandpa and his brother took a long gun to school everyday as young kids. They ran a trap line along the route they walked to the spot where a bus would pick them up. So, they had to tote a .22 rifle or shotgun along everyday to kill whatever what in their traps. They'd board the bus and walk into class with the LOADED gun in hand.

Cylinder choke is at least as useful as a too tight Full. With better ammo, good out to 30 yards.

Over the last half century or so I've run across a dozen or more much altered single shots. Good for woods running, truck guns, barn guns, tractor guns, etc.

Easy to carry, durable, effective.....

T.R.,

Thanks for your service Fly-boy! I went into the Navy after graduation '67, went to Nam and came home 2 years later. Retired from a local brewery after 37 years, got the silver hairs too, comes with the territory! Thanks again for service, OOHHRRAAHH !
