A new gun range opened up near me and they require you to wear a baseball cap to shoot there. They say it is for safety and I can see wearing safety glasses and ear muffs but a cap? I have never heard of such a thing and think it is stupid.

I had a buddy once have a hot casing from his 9mm bounce off the wall next to him and fall between his safety glasses and his eye. He had a nice burn mark on his eyelid from that one. After that, he wore a ball cap and safety goggles and never had that issue again.
It seems dumb to me too to require a cap but I guess I see why they made the rule. I bet the range sells their own brand of cap too don't they?

That is pretty stupid, and I have never heard of that. My father actually turns his ball cap around to keep brass from somehow coming up under the bill and grazing his face.

I've not seen it required at the ranges I've used, but many have signs recommending if you have hair longer than shoulder length you need a cap so your hair doesn't obstruct your vision.

Is that one of those stupid ranges that also don't allow reloads, even in your own weapon? We have one here on the West side in Fort Worth and I don't go there because of the overly restrictive rules even restricting people to closed toe shoes. Their club, their rules, my choice where I spend my money, my choice where I recommend to other shooters.

Some ranges have really goofy rules. Of course they're free to make whatever off the wall rules they want just as you are free to shoot somewhere else.
There was a thread not too long ago where the poster said the range officer told his wife that head shots on targets weren't allowed. Something about shooting the track that the targets run on. I guess I understand their position on that but what if you're 6'9'' and taller than the angle of trajectory that would damage the track? Who knows

In the grand scheme of things I guess having to wear a hat isn't a "bad" thing. Is this an outdoor range?

As a rule, I don't like rules.

In competition I always wear a cap as I have also seen the brass stuck between face and glasses. Come to think of it I don't know too many competitive shooters that don't wear a cap.

Back to the first statement I simply don't go to ranges that I dissagree with their policy.

I don't shoot competition (yet), but when I get serious and shoot scenario based targets on my property, I wear a cap. Keeps the brass out of my face and the sun out of my eyes.

That being said, if it were a rule at my range I would hate it. Why would I hate it? Because:

As a rule, I don't like rules.

Their house, their rules though. I would vote with my wallet if I found the rule silly or offensive enough. If it was my usual range, I would tell them I'm going elsewhere and why without being rude. I may only buy a couple of guns a year, but maybe they might value my opinion as a return customer.

That has got to be the most idiotic rule in the books.
I understand some general safety rules but essentially enforcing a dress code or clothing or hair preference is a big difference to enforcing safety.

It's also safer to walk in hiking shoes than it is to walk in heels, right? ONOEZ! Someone might trip in heels with a gun! Quick! Ban heels at ranges! And yellow reflective belts for eveyone! And helmets! Everyone must wear helmets! With a full faceplate!

kinda like the rule at the range outside of gainesville where no steel case ammo is allowed because a dudes gun blew up from an apparent double charge from the factory (that happened to be tula)

The goofy rules could be courtesy of the local city council/government. I know we have a new range trying to open near Richmond, Va, and the local government is coming up with every and any insane rule they can to discourage it from opening. :barf::banghead::barf::banghead:

I rely on hot brass to keep me warm in the winter.

Seriously, I've had hot brass on my face many many times and it's not exactly a major threat to life and limb.

Insurance companies may have something to do with rules too. You just never know where they are comming from, but most are overprotective. There are times at the range when I don't wear my safety glasses while shooting. I just forget to pull them down from my head. If you think safety rules on your range are ridiculous, try working offshore ;)

With Bob McDonnell at the helm, I'm sure it'll open

It's too keep the hot brass out of your glasses as a previous poster stated. In an indoor range, it's a much bigger risk due to the empties bouncing off the dividers and coming back at you.

When I took my CCW course here in Oklahoma the instructor did require eye and ear protection and a cap RECOMMENDED for the shooting part.

I do use a cap all the time for my semi autos and optional for my revolvers. I have only one eye and would not want a hot casing to go between my only eye and glasses.

Why the need for a "new rule" though,, I'll bet the first time you get a kiss from hot brass to your face you would take measures to insure it dosent happen again,, kinda like telling a doctor" my arm hurts when i do this" ... well dont do that !!

I've been to one range that required a ball cap. If you're in close proximity to other pistol shooters, it's a smart thing to have. In terms of the overall scheme of things, if you are at someone else's range, you usually have to follow their rules or go somewhere else.

Had thr brass between the glasses deal and always wear a cap now. I know it wont kill you but sure hurts like hell. I get hurt enough and don't need that.
