Location
Big Bend of FL, originally from Miami.
Currently been a cop for five years in Miami, FL. I want a change of scenery and Albuquerque PD is taking apps. Any info on Albuquerque, New Mexico? They aren't the only place I've submitted apps to but they called me back and want to to fly out in March for testing.

I'm not married, have no kids, not even tied down my a mortgage. Just filling out apps and seeing here they go. I want to move for a change of weather and geography. Also want to live in a state with a smaller population then Florida and more open land. Like to hunt, camp, fish, shoot. blah, blah blah. State must be NFA Friendly since I own a number of NFA item.

What's the Open Carry and CCW laws like? Any firearm registration?

I used to live there. You could certainly do worse for a place
to live and work. It is NFA friendly and just elected a Rep.
governor. The city elected a Rep. mayor two years ago. Some
APD officers get to take their vehicles home.

There is no firearms registration. CCW is relatively easy to obtain.
The one weird CCW law is that you can carry only one, concealed
at a time.

Good luck with your relocation.

I have not been in Albuquerque for some time, but it was a nice city. If you like outdoor activities, hunting, fishing, camping, or to ski you should love NM. I do though understand that they have a developing gang problem, but probably not to the extent you see in your current area.
Do though understand that NM has a very Western rural feel to it, so don't expect Palm Beach or South Beach which can be a nice change.

Albuquerque is like a lot of other medium sized cities, in that it has its fair share of gangbangers, and wannabees, but all in all it is one of the nicer areas. Climate is very good year round, a lot less rain than you are used to, 10-12, inches per year. PD is pretty good but has a little criticism in the past few years in use of lethal force. Outlying areas are much better to live in than Abq proper. Open carry is allowed and chl is easy to get, No firearm reg. required other than NFA items. PS check into Placitas area for nice place to live. PM me if you need any more info.

I'm not a fan of Albuquerque. Just too many people for me. Lots of nice places around it though. NM is gun friendly with both open and concealed carry. Lots of national forest, state, and BLM land to prowl around in if that is your thing.

I met an Albuquerque policeman a couple of years ago north of Pecos. He was pulling in as I was loading up to leave and waited for the camping spot I was in. He told me he had three days off and just had to get away from all the crime for a few days.

I used to live in the city. It's an awesome city all-around. It also has shooting range park, which is a state-owned shooting range which I swear was one of the best I've used. It used to be $5 a day, I don't know what it is now though.

Abq is a pretty decent city. Set right up against the Sandia mountains and at a higher elevation than Denver, which is about 300 miles farther north. The culture is a mix of Old West, Spanish, and Indian. Plenty of decent ski areas within easy driving distance of a couple of hours. Pleasant dry climate. Pine forests at higher elevations, deserts at lower. Good hunting and fishing nearby. NM is a gun-friendly state, generally speaking. I intend to move across the state line in the not too distant future, myself.

Hope you like what you see during your interview.

Let's see.......You're seeking freedom....And contemplating moving to NM ? Yeah, they just elected a conservative governor....but most of the legislature is still following the LPE line.....Its become an enclave for the 'lunatic fringe' of every eco-wacko movement and "artistic movement" ever spawned. >MW

Y'all better check the 30 year compiled weather statistics - 7-9 inches per year precipitation. We had 3-inches of clear air last night instead of the 1-3 inches of snow forecast...

Zia Gun Club - on land rented from the State south of the Airport. As previously stated -Police range is next to Zia. Variety of ranges including a 600 yard Camp Pendleton style range. Bad part of the layout is the ranges face south making sighting at some of the ranges problematic depending on time of day. No official range officers - first person using a range is the designated range officer.

Del Norte Gun Club - way out... north of Rio Rancho off of Highway 550 at the end of a marginally maintained dirt road. Nice facilities including a 1,000 yard range. Good trap facility.

Albuquerque Shooting Range Park - run by the City Open Space Division on State of NM land (a State Park but operated by the City). It is on the west side at the top of 9 Mile Hill and north on Paseo del Vulcan near Double Eagle Airport (about 12 miles from downtown ABQ). The NRA National Police Championships are held in September at Shooting Range Park.

...aaand the often forgotten Albquerque Trap Club. Open Saturday and Sunday only. South of ABQ off of south Broadway (NM 47 where it goes over I-25) near the Cal-Main Foods egg production facility. Used to be able to buy eggs directly from them - a flat of 32 eggs cost $2.50 ....aaaahhh the good 'ol days. Now we buy them from the dairy for $1.80 for 18...

From someone in New Jersey....okay sport shoes...let's see, isn't that the place that arrests people for merely transporting firearms? Obviously, you've never been to Hobbs, Farmington, Grants, Silver City, Clovis, etc. There's a whole lot more to NM than Taos and Santa Fe.

Sure...sure....sure you are... "New Mexico - Where Texans vacation because there's nowhere to go in Texas." I kid, but Ruidoso any time of year... or the Cloudcroft Ski Area... Taos Ski Basin...any trout stream in the summer....you have to beat your way through the Texas license plates. You guys don't have income tax - we do - what's the benefit of moving to NM when you can visit anytime?

I would first like to extend a gesture of gratitude for your desire to work in LE. Now about New Mexico, I was born their and lived in the state for a number of years. Gun laws in that state are nearly non existent, a wonderful state to which my current state of residency has adopted some of their's. One can carry open, conealed, and purchase without a permit. Although one can apply for a ccw, it's not required to carry concealed or open. It is also legal to carry into establishments that serve alcohol if your not consuming, and if the establishment doesn't prohibit it.
Hunting and outdoors stuff is some of the best around with a good number of record book elk, almost as good as Arizona. Turkey hunting is amazing and over the counter with 2 spring birds and 1 fall. Deer is also over the counter. Antelope are not an easy tag to draw for, but the quality of goats in that state are competitive with Arizona for sure.
I hope this helped you some and I'm sure you'll enjoy your work and recreation in that very conservative enviroment.

Wow, this coming from someone from NJ, that's just hilarious.

From someone who actually lives in NM let me tell you that it is a great State. The land is beautiful, the economy is good, it's extremely gun friendly and NFA friendly. If you like the outdoors there is a little bit of everything here from desert to mountains and forest, plenty of places to hike, hunt and fish if you are into that kind of thing. There's tons of history and culture and the natives are generally quite friendly and welcoming to newcomers. People say that you should learn Spanish if you plan to live in NM and it is extremely helpful because much of the population is Hispanic, however I've been here for a number of years and don't speak Spanish and I get by just fine. If you're going to get into LE here then learning basic Spanish is probably a good idea. I'm from Maine originally and lived in Arizona for a number of years, although I will always be a New England boy at heart I absolutely love it here in NM. Albuquerque is a nice city, a bit too large for my tastes but as far as cities go it's a comfortable size and easy to get around in.

Yeah, funny.....Albuquerque is a nice city but there is definitely a growing crack and gang problem, and it's only going to get worse. The DUI problem is kinda a joke too...one guy was arrested two days ago for the 12th time.

But there's lots of land to shoot on. West mesa from Albuquerque west is mostly open BLM land for nearly 100 miles, great hunting in the northern mountains, fantastic fishing right in the Jemez mountains and the Gila as well.

The crazies are thick around Taos but we just kinda ignore them and let them have their Hollywood parties and do whatever it is they do, don't bother us much.

Oh, good hiking in the Sandias and Jemez areas too. Welcome.

OK, buck...

I have a little acerage with a cabin on it a few miles outside of Cloudcroft. That'll be my fulltime home within a couple of years if things work out right.

No income tax? Texas doesn't need it with 8.25% sales tax and property tax that's about 6x what I pay in NM.

If you like the outdoors, there's lots of it in NM. ABQ is located in a good area--high desert, low humidity, mountains nearby, nice scenery, good mix of cultures...you know: location, location, location. Downside is that it has the same problems as other cities.

I've never lived there but I've been visiting NM often for about 30 years. ABQ is a little too big for me but, hell, I can remember when Santa Fe was a small town, before it became a "style". But the whole area still has a lot going for it. You probably won't miss those Florida summers.

I lived in Las Cruces a back in the 1990's...grad school at NMSU and worked at WSMR. I liked th e south part of the statea lot better than Albaqwuirky. Still remember Chope's in La Union...best chile rellenos I ever had, and then there's the Owl in San Antonio for green chile cheeseburgers. I will return some day.
