Black Talon

BT ammo is nickel cased. The seller says it's nickel cased. I suspect it's a lighting/camera glitch that makes it appear brassier than it really is.

No it depends on the yr it was made. I have seen them in everything from brass to bright shiny steel. The black box SXT did look like chrome plated cartidges. I think they where like that '90-'93. Brass was the 50 rnd box back in the '80s.

Um, why the hell would you buy old ammo?

Black Talon is somewhat collectible but more of a curiosity at the moment. I've saved a couple of dozen boxes of BT, too, in various calibers. They have a notoriety-factor that'll increase their value but I'd recon it'll take at least a couple of decades before it's really sought after by collectors.

Some day my grandkids may appreciate it that I saved them.

As I do that my dad did. May have only kept 3 rounds, lol, but it's still cool.

Doubtful IMO.. Unfounded rumors dont generally shape the collection markets.

There are 5 days left on the auction and it has already gotten a bid of $35.

Similar ammo for shooting is $22 - $25.

It seems that the Black Talon ammo has already acquired at least $10 worth of collector value and is likely to finally sell for even more:

So it seems pretty firmly established that Black Talon ammo does in fact have collector value now.

A sucker born every minute... :) One of the sellers using the same unfounded rumors as 20yrs ago in the ads.

PDX1's are the same basic bullet today. at 25 a box... Ill go with those...

Looks like he just set the white balance to daylight when it should've been incandescent.

Collector value is value ABOVE its practical value based on rarity . There are lot's of loads that you can buy that are cheaper. I agree that if you want something to shoot, you would be foolish to buy Black Talons. However, the fact that people are willing to pay MORE for BTs than other ammo that would work just as well DEFINES collector value.

Pass on it. The ammo today is better than Black Talon is/was.....chris3

I guess I should sell the two 50 round boxes of BT, one in 45acp and the other in 357 that I have.....chris3

Why own BT ammo;

It just looks good in the display-case. "Notice per Notoriety" reflex I guess. L1S1

Precisely.

I've shot a few BT:s into ballistic gel and while they perform ok, they're barely a match to more modern self defense rounds. That, however, is not the point. The political outcry they created back in the 90's is and I'm quite positive that it'll affect the collector value in the long run.

They're still pretty common nowadays, which will probably not be the case in 20 or 50 years. Considering what collectors pay for original indian .303 dumdum rounds nowadays, it's bound to happen - and "dumdums" were common mass produced, low quality military rounds that were little more than defective surplus in their day. :)

Nicely done, sir.:)

A little color-correcting hint...

Use the Info Palette and Curves. Set your Sample Size to 3x3 pixels more-or-less depending on image size. Mouse over the "near" black areas (what should be 5,5,5) and pull the lowest R then G then B curve control points horizontally or vertically while staying on the boundary box of the Curves Panel until the Info Palette shows them corrected. Then find what an area that should be near white (250,250,250) and pull the R then G then B control points vertically/horizontally and keeping against the bounding box until the Info Palette regsiters this area appropriately. Find an area that should be neutral gray (127,127,127) and add a control point to the middle of the R then G then B curves then pull them diagonally to bend the curves up or down so that the reading is near 127,127,127. Then adjust the RGB curve the same way... the darkest point may or may not be black (0,0,0) and the whitest point may or may not be white (255,255,255). Being very image dependant... this is "often" a fairly accurate way of color correcting but it's even more acurate to convert all curves to "S" shapes. That can take a little time to master if you're not familiar with color correction and mixed lighting can be a real nightmare.

ETA: To put this back on-topic. There's just no way to be sure that ammo is nickel plated other than to "Ask the Seller a Question".:)
