FWIW- my dad had a 4" magnaported 629, and i found the difference between it and an unported 4" 29 was very little, unless full pressure loads were used.

Back in the 70's Mag-Na-Port made a custom conversion revolver from a Charter Arms BullDog. They called it the "Backpacker". I believe they were serialed numbered from 1 - 200. When Ken Kelly (Mag-Na-Port) showed me pictures of the backpacker, I knew I had to have one. Ken told me I would have to locate an older BullDog without the underlug on the barrel.
About a year ago I found a nice Charter Arms BullDog. It was an older model from the early 70's, and blued. I paid $200.00 for the BullDog. Then off it went to Mag-Na-Port for the conversion. A few days ago I received it back. Some of the things that were done to it was the barrel shortened to 1.75", barrel porting, eliminate the front sight, bobbed hammer, hard chrome finish, and trigger job. I will eventually have Patrick Grashorn make some Elk grips for it.
I shot 25 rounds of Winchester Silver tips through it today. Without a front if you try to aim it, the BullDog shoots all over the place. So I did point & shoot, and it worked pretty good. All this was at about 10 feet.

What's the point of a magna port? I understand it's for recoil reduction, but it seems like it gets applied to a lot of guns that don't have much recoil.

I never had any use for it. Theoretically it allows you to get back on target faster during follow up shots, but the upward muzzle flash is going to blind you in low light.

Great revolvers, thanks for sharing the pictures.

I have a M640 with a Mag-na-port barrel which is my favorite J frame. I'm usually not a fan of ported barrels especially in a SD handgun but that revolver shoots so well I can't help but like it a lot!

Your opinion is the same as mine. I don't see much advantage to a Magna-port job on anything less than full-house 357 loads. But some people have to have one. Magna-port first became popular in the early 80s when the model 29 was popular from Dirty Harry.

Mag-Na-Port is my first choice for custom Smith & Wesson revolvers. They do excellent work that's second to none. I'll just never, never, ever let them cut those ports into another barrel.

Those magnaported Bulldogs look interesting, I would love to shoot one so I could compare to my unported Bulldog. Not sure if I would port a carry gun because of the flash.

I can say Mag-na-port does fine work. Here's my M27-3 8.375" with the full mag-na-port treatment.

I own two 27-2s. I've never seen the load so stiff as to need, or even utilize, mag-na-port out of an N frame 357 Smith. Especially not with the 8 3/8 inch barrel.

Love my magna ported 586

I have a magna ported S&W 586 with a 4 inch barrel. It was made to be a bowling pin gun. I have used it for steel plate also.
For the guys who are nay sayers on magna porting, Have you ever shot a gun that it has been done on?
It makes a 357 like a 38. You do have a bit of flash going up and it does seem louder. That is only as the noise is going up and out not just out front.
It is the best way to tame a magnum firearm. When I shoot 38's out of it it is like shooting a 22.
It works on auto as well, I have shot a few custom 45's and 9mm with this done on them. Well worth the money.

Yu know, I'v been thinking about picking up one of those Talo Edition S&W 3" 629's as a woods gun. I could see Mag-na-porting that gun. I imagine it would help with full power .44's in a 3" gun.

I had a Dan Wesson 744 w/a four inch barrel that was ported. I didn't like it. I replaced the barrel with a non-ported version.

I don't like the extra noise. I don't like the flash. And I don't like the extra mess of cleaning out the ports. Actually, I couldn't even shoot lead bullets. That was a no no.

Their custom pistol work is right up there with the best IMHO and I have never seen a botched job from them in 30+ years.

I'm not "naysaying it," I'm questioning its necessity or even its benefit on a gun that doesn't need it. On a 2 inch barreled scandium 44 mag? Sure. On an 8 inch barreled N Frame 357? You might want to see your doctor if you need that.

Considering the very real damage it could do to your ears (more so than normal gunfire reports), I don't see the use. I have a Model 29, stock grips, 8 inch barrel, and the recoil is lively but manageable. I wouldn't dare have someone butcher it and make it twice as loud.

Magnaport Ruger SP101

They do not have to poke holes in everything. I had them re-work my revolver and am completely satisfied with their work, you can get as good somewhere else, but not better!
