I hope you guys can help diagnose my 1911 problem.

I have a springfield "loaded" 1911 that has been giving me some problems. It was purchased new in august of this year, and this marks the second time it will be going back to sprinfield for repair. The first time was for an out of spec slide stop that caused premature lockback of the slide.

Today was the first time I've gotten to shoot it since it has been back, and it continues to have problems. Now it seems to have extractor issues.

In addition to occasionally throwing brass in my face, it exibits two main malfunctions, the first being stovepiping, and the other I've never heard of before.
The fired cartridge is still retained by the extractor, but is moved up on the breach face, above the ejector, it then crashes into the top of the chamber/ barrel hood. The top round in the magazine is removed from the magazine, but doesnt make it anywhere, and falls out when the mag is removed.

I know it is not case of the gun short stroking, becuase when i retract the slide, the case stays on the breechface, and must be manually removed.

So does this sound like an extractor problem? I have to admit im pretty peeved, the gun has spent more time with springfield than it has with me, and springfield is supposed to be a decent pistol.

The extractor is probably clocking and the breech face may be machined too high.

I forgot to mention that it seemed that when I placed a case on the breechface, it would slide under the extractor and it seemed to drag a little on opposite side, as if there isnt quite enought clearance.

The breech block on the left, opposite the extractor, is the tension wall for the extractor to hold the case rim against. Have you also checked for correct tension? There should be enough tension to hold a loaded cartridge with it inserted in the slide only. Gentle shaking should not cause it to fall out.

I did, and while did didn't fall out, it did move around a lot, up and down as well as side to side.

The tension may be fine, but the extractor from what you have said, is losing control, and allowing the case to go too high for the ejector to contact, and eject. It may benefit from more tension.

this was with, federal HST, WWB, as well as my reloads, which replicate military ball in OAL and velocity. I havent have any feeding problems, and I can't see how ths could be an ammo issue? It seems to me like an extractor issue, but non the less, it is on its way back to springfield to let them have a look at it. I thought about trying to fix it myself but since the gun is so new, I figured i'd let them fix it.

Never mind. Thought it was a feed problem...but it's an extractor thing.
The hook is probably too long from the tensioning wall to the tip of the claw. Length is more critical with an extended ejector. It should be .034-.036 inch.

Check the breechface. Remove the extractor and push a round in from the bottom. If it goes out the top of the port...or even if it goes a little too high...it may need a new slide.

I did try this, and as I recall it did go up higher than i thought it should , but not quite all the way out of top. Should it stop in the "normal" position it would be in when firing and go no higher?

I've already sent the gun back to springfield, is this something you think they would catch? I wrote a letter explaning in detail the problems I've been having, and they said they would fix it. Or do I need to call and explain that I suspect I need a new slide? Would they even listen?

That doesnt sound like my gun...

I guess we'll see what springfield has to say, hopefully they'll catch it during their exam of the gun and fix/ replace it if out of spec.

Thanks 1911tuner, I'm gratefull to have people like you on here to help.

One of the single stack competitors in last weekend's USPSA match had his TRP extractor break during a stage. The TRP is just a few months old and has less than 3,000 factory rounds through it. The extractor hook snapped clean off!! I carry a spare tensioned/tested Ed Brown extractor in my range bag for my Kimber when I shoot matches so it was an easy swap and he was able to shoot the final stage. I suggested that he buy a new Wilson Combat or Ed Brown extractor and learn to tension them himself, but he was dead set on sending the pistol back to Springfield.

If it were something so strait forward, I would just do that myself. But it does seem from Tuners explanation, that there may be something amis with the breech dementions.

I was going through some of the brass from this range trip, and I saw one piece of brass that reminded me of something to give you an idea of how high the cartridges were allowed to go up on the breech face.

It was dented, almost directly across the middle of the case mouth on both sides, by the top of the barrel hood as the slide tried to return to battery. The case head was against the breech face and the extractor was still in the case rim.

Wow, 15 posts and nobody bashing Springfield. Dollars to Donuts if it'd been a Taurus or RIA we'd not get three posts without "that's what you get for buying cheap".

Everyone lets bad product get out, its what they do to make it right that really matters. Having been sent back once already is depressing, but as long as they pay the shipping its just an inconvenience.
