my uncle called me tonight and he is trying to load 223 with 3031.. advised varget or h335, but he insists... don't know why.. but anyway, his spear manual is saying 26.0 is max, my hodgdon and sierra both say 24.6, and hornady is in left field with 22.8...

so I just thought i would see what personal experience has been if your using this combo on a 55gr sp

id be really surprised if he can stuff 26 grns of any powder in a 223 case, but hey i dont know.if he is stuk on imr powders and i like them. tell him to try 4198.it takes less powder and ive not found. a gun yet that doesnt shoot it well.he may be trying to use one powder for everything and 3031 is not that bad of a choice for that.

I load 26.0 grans of varget... so you can actually load 27.5 3031..

he isn't trying to use one for everything, cause he went out and bought this.. the back story is he told me all this a month ago, and so I gave him a couple powders that I and many on here have found to be ideal for this cartridge, and I also gave him some 3031(i use it in 45-70) just to get it out of his sysem.. he shot the best groups with the 3031... so who knows, maybe it shot better maybe he put extra effort into proving to himself he wanted to use it... I don't know.. it is not my first choice by any means.. but it does have decent data for it..

I am mainly looking for some personal experiences I can relay to him on what people are experiencing with this combo

IMR 3031 & 223 Remington/5.56mm

IMR 3031-21.0gr-68gr Hornady-CCI400 Just put 5 thru a Savage Axis = 11/16" group @ 100 yds. Needs more testing. IMR 4198-69gr Sierra looks more promising in this 1-9 twist barrel. Steve's pages list IMR-3031 From 20.5 grains to 26.0 grains with a 55gr bullet.

I guess the question I have is what platform is he using the .223 in? Speer is using a Ruger bolt action, and Hornady is using a Remington 700. (Along with different firing platforms, they're also using different brass.)

Regardless of how well the components line up, I would work up the load slowly, as one always should. I would venture beyond the 24.5 mark only if I was confident in the pressure signs, and was displeased with the accuracy results I was getting up until then.

An old article about the unreliable Viet Nam era M16 said that the original powder was a bulk lot OEM variant of 3031 so it should do just fine if he does not mind measuring the long grained powder.
Lyman thinks 24.5 grains 3031 (compressed) is the .223 MAXIMUM with a 55 grain bullet, which agrees with Sierra.

20" AR15... looks like you guys are coming up with most of the same data I did.. I just thought maybe someone would be able to give some insight on their experience with it...

he had worked up to 25.0 grains based one the speer manual, which puts him 1.0 grains under their max. and accuracy was pleasing. but when I started looking at everyone else' data I got a little nervous and told him to consult a few other manuals... and I said the same thing move back down to 24.5 or even 24 and see how that works if accuracy is good leave it alone, and I think his accuracy was fine at those charge weights

I've tried 3031 with several bullet weights in the 223. It's always been dirty and accuracy was fair at best, usually not as good as fair. Didn't like it in the 45-70 either. H-4895 is much better with the bullets I shoot. I decided to use the rest of the 3031 to fireform brass.
