What is out there for AR 15s chambered in .45 ACP? The only one I've seen so far that is in production is the Olympic Arms version that has a fugly looking magazine. What else is out there?

I really wish Lone Wolf would make a .45 ACP version of their lower that uses Glock magazines. A buddy of mine and I are trying to acquire one of the 9mm versions to check out the possibilities of machining it out to accept the 45 magazines. With the abundance of Glock regular and extended magazines, this surely would be a money maker for someone.

Does anyone make a high capacity magazine for the G21?

I could understand it for the 9mm since 33 rounders are readily available.

I actually got to go up to Lone Wolf Dist a few months ago and meet up with the guys and do some consulting on their video equipment. It was pretty cool seeing all their custom rigs for glocks and the 9mm AR looked pretty nifty, but at the pricepoint they're asking ($1500+), the fact that you have to buy the whole firearm, not just an upper and a mag adapter. I dunno, it looked kind of like a fruitless venture. You can get a Kel Tec Sub2k for $350 out the door and it takes glock mags, so why would you want to drop $1500 for the same thing, but it just looks like an AR?

Ever since the kriss came out there have been 30 rounders for the glock .45.

Msar was supposed to have a carbine using them, but that fell through.

Both uppers are Olys. The left lower is using Uzi mags with a magblock welded on while the right lower is a first generation* Bazooka Bros. that uses grease gun mags.

*New BAZ45 lowers are CNC machined.

I have one of the Lone Wolf Glock lowers, and I do not think there is any way there is room for the .45 mags. I had to machine the magwell quite a bit to get it to the point where loaded magazines could be loaded with one hand and drop free.

Really, why?? The one we were looking at seemed to have more than enough room to take away the required metal for it to work. How tight was the one you got you had to work on? Interesting to hear some first hand accounts of that lower.

I'm thinking that I'll go with either a .40 S&W AR 15 or a 9mm. Does anyone know if Olympic Arms 9mm uppers are the same as RRA?

I will have to get out the calipers but the max exterior dimension is not the only thing to consider. You also need to account for the pin/mag release combo.

I would plan on getting a regular receiver and getting a mag block so I have the option of going to a rifle caliber. I found one for $85 on Brownells that says it works with OlyArms uppers but those are expensive.

The .45ACP makes a poor rifle round. The short stubby pistol bullets loose velocity very rapidly and drop like a rock past around 75 yards. If you are looking for a close range self-defense carbine that will only be used at indoor distiances it will do just fine but realize its limitations.

They are very different... RRA is a colt pattern, and CMMG is as well. Both offer dedicated lowers so you don't have to use a magblock.

The Oly uses a different bolt, bbl, ejector, and magazines. The upper is simply a standard upper with a few extra holes drilled for Oly's ejector. One advantage to the Olympic setup is that you can get a less expensive magblock to use un-modified Sten magazines, which are dirt cheap compared to Colt pattern mags from various manufacturers.

I prefer the colt pattern 9mm ARs, as they are from more reputable manufactures and have the BHO. However, the only issue my Oly .45 upper has had was the flash hider coming loose. I have an AR10 flash hider and crush washer I plan on installing, but haven't had the center reamed out to 1/2" yet...

Given the cost of the AR systems for 45 I would prefer the Mech Tech or one of the Masterpiece Arms Mac versions. I shoot a Mech Tech now and my brother has the Masterpiece Arms and both work flawlessly, are accurate, and costs were well below doing an AR.

Thureon Defense is making 2 models that are chambered in .45 ACP. One takes modified Uzi mags, the other uses Glock 21 mags. (yes, Hi-Cap mags are available for both) The upper and lower receivers are machined from aluminum bar stock, and other than the stock and grip, uses no plastic parts.

You can check out their website at www.mycarbine.com. Here is a YouTube video of a gal shooting the .45. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vkh59GIX-8&feature=feedu

Here is a picture of their Glock compatible carbine.

 I just looked them up...

Keep your eyes peeled. The week after I got my upper, for about $550 shipped, a store I frequent mentioned he'd sold a complete used carbine the week before for about $650:banghead:

With the exception of my $500 Kimber, that has been the story of my life...
