This past weekend I went to the range to sight in my rifle. My father-in-law let me borrow his 'Steady Rest' since I don't have anything like that and we both thought it was the best option for trying to get my new scope zeroed in. Without going into too much detail, I didn't like it at all. Afterward I was thinking to myself that I probably would have been better off with a simple sand bag.

I've looked at the ones that you can buy and was wondering if anyone has ever made their own. I mean, they can't be that hard to make if you use the right materials. Has anyone ever done this? If so, what materials did you use and how hard was it/how long did it take?

The legs off of a pair of old jeans will make you 4-6 bags, provided you have access to a sewing machine to sew the ends shut. Another option it to find some shotgunners and ask for their empty shot bags. Coin bags from the bank work well also.

I've made a bunch of them out of old 25 lb shotgun shot bags.

Old blue jeans legs work well too.

Only tip I have is, don't sew the top shut after you fill them up on mama's good sewing machine!!

I do all the sewing that needs to be done and leave just a loose corner big enough to get a small funnel in.

Then after filling, you can hand sew or staple it closed.

if you know somebody who works at a bar get some purple crown royal bags. buy some sand at home depot and sew them up. almost all bars throw those bags away:D

I made these out of nail pouches from the local bigbox lumber yard. They work well for me. Like RC I sewed up the top with the wifes sewing machine leaving about 1" open. inserted a funnel went to the creek for sand and filled them. took a needle and thread and sewed the last 1" by hand. I think the nail pouches were .75 cents or something like that. Be carefull because you can get them too full for folding.
