I have a Sig P229 loaded with 15 rounds of 147gr. It's heavy and uncomfortable to carry to the point of not wanting to carry. I carry IWB.

I'm wondering if the Glock 19 or XD 3.8 compact is noticeably lighter?

Thanks. Jake.

I sometimes carry my s&w m&p 45 IWB in a comptac minatour holster. and I'll be damned if it isn't as uncomfortable as all hell. Way too much gun. I suppose a lot of my discomfort stems from carrying an LC9 IWB that feels like nothing and hides tremendously well. I don't even have a decent holster for the lc9. I carry it in a $25 nylon desantis stealth pro. If I carried it in a decent IWB I couldn't imagine how nice it would be.

The point of my rambling was to say that I think even a glock 19 wouldn't be very nice to carry to me. Though, perhaps, if coming from a SIG 229 it would be worlds better. It's all relative to what you're used to. I'd say if you want easy comfort and concealability, go a sub-compact or pocket gun route. I can't sing the LC9s praises enough on here. Though there are several other companies that seem to offer equally reliable, affordable and easy to carry sub-compacts.

I have a Sig 228, a Glock 17 and used to have a XD 45. I find that the G17 is a bit lighter than the Sig, but the extra ammo seems to cut into the difference. I guess if both guns carry the same amount of ammo the gock would still be lighter. I thought the XD felt a bit heavier than the Glock, but that could be the difference in the weight of the .45 ammo versus the 9mm.

Regardless of your decision on which gun you end up carrying, I would highly recommend a good holster and dedicated gun belt. I CCW my Sig 228 in a Crossbreed with a Beltman gun belt and don't have any problems at all.

The Glock will be the lightest, but you REALLY need to rent/try all those firearms first. Especially the XD's, and XDm's if you're thinking about that. IMO, the XDm trigger is a LOT better than the XD's, but SF will switch the trigger for you if you call them and complain.

Moral of the story, try them first. You should be extremely comfortable with the firearm you trust your life to.

I like my very thin LtWgt Commander, per Spec it's 26 oz empty.

The lightest, no, but the right combo of thin/weight/shape/shootability/Reliability/firepower. Proven reliability, ability and experience.

For plastic 9's I like the HK P30 or the S&W M&P FS.

Just my 2 Drachmas.

Good Luck.

Fred

Glock wins the capacity/weight/size ratio 90% of the
time.

147 - 124 = 23 x 16 = 368

By going to a good 124 alone like the GD +P you could save an ounce. You get a Glock 19 and it will probably be size not weight that's the issue. A few ounces makes a big difference at the end of a 20 hour day. A good belt is mandatory though the Sig is a tank. Nice gun but not for carry. I have other pistols I like more but the Glocks do CC duty very well.

I carry a Sig P229 and a CZ 75 D PCR in a Galco Summer comfort IWB holster with a stiff Amish made gun belt. I also wear a thin undershirt between me and the gun, even if I'm just wearing a t-shirt over. I wouldn't call it 'comfortable' but it's not overly uncomfortable. I'm 5'11" and 180 to give you an idea of my frame size. The right belt and holster are paramount.

The weight difference alone is 12oz difference between the sig ans glock. Thats the weight of most ultra lite revolvers or a pf-9 . Even my Kahr cm9 is 14oz empty. You could carry to of them and be lighter than the sig. If the thickness of a large sized pistol is not the issue then the glock 19 would be a major change in weight with no other changes. If you had a comp-tac hollster you could also change only the plastic only for a different gun to..

The last gun I carried before going to Glock 19 was a P228, which is lighter than a P229, but still way heavier than the Glock. Weight is just one of the many advantages. Even between plastic guns, the Glock is notably lighter than the others. If you compare the Glock to a Sig pro or XD, you will wonder how the latter two managed to pack so much weight into a polymer frame. The M&P frame is light too, but still a little heavier than the Glock.

This....^^^^^^^ + 1

And a proper belt and holster make just as big a difference if the gun starts out 3/4 lb lighter.

I think my Glock 17 fully loaded weighs less than my XD9SC and i know my Glock 23 does, that is why my main OWB is a Glock 26...:)

I never carried it in public (and subsequently gave the holster to my boss, who needed an IWB holster for both his SIG 226 and Glock 22), but I did try a DeSantis Cozy Partner IWB holster with my SIG 226 (when I still had it) and a good gun belt at 3:30...didn't even feel like I was carrying it.

Assuming you are using a good holster and belt for your 229...I'd imagine that either the G19 or the XDM would be lighter (the spec charts suggest that a loaded G19 is about an ounce heavier as an unloaded XDM 3.8, and two ounces lighter than even an empty P229).

Make sure you try/shoot the G19 first before you buy one. I found that on the Gen3 G19, the bottom swell of the backstrap would push into the fleshy part of my palm and force the barrel slightly up from point of aim:

I subsequently went to a G26 and no such issue...it points much more naturally for me:

Can't comment about the XDM, never really handled one for very long. I shot an XD subcompact a while ago, and the one thing I didn't care for was how high the bore axis was (although it's about the same as the SIG's), which is one of the reasons why I went with the Glock.

My G19 gen 4 dissappears in a supertuck. I would never own another gun for CC then a polymer pistol. Even my M&P 45c carries like a champ. If you want to carry, there are to many polymer options out there to buy a steel gun for carry.
