NRA dvd on defense shooting? What to do?

I get a dvd on defense shooting today and a "collector coin". Now I joined the NRA to support rights and help out, and I put up with the inundation of emails, but what I won't do is get this junk in the mail and then be told I have to review it and if I don't like it send it back? Since when did I oblige myself to taking action in a timely fashion for them?

Did anybody else get this? What did you do? Just keep it or throw it away? I don't care that they include an envelope or whatever, it is a hassle to keep up with and I use a PO box that I don't go to all that often unless I'm expecting something. Keeping track of this is at the bottom of my list, an inconvenience, and frankly, kind of rude on their part to ask this of me. I didn't ask for it, and I don't intend on sending it back. I feel if I do, I have committed myself to jumping through their hoops, either to myself to to them, unacceptable either way.

Do they charge you if you don't send it back? I guess if they do, I'll dispute it and withdraw my membership, and I had planned on a lifetime when one of those $300 buddy programs open up next year. I can't glean a clear answer from the papers they sent though regarding the DVD. And they were closed when I called.

If they make this a hassle for me, I'll cancel the membership. I don't mind supporting the NRA and I made a big deal about it on here, but they've really bugged the fire out of me since I let them know I existed and sent them a check. Wow. Furthermore, I don't agree with their political views they tend to promote heavily (Glenn Beck might like firearms, but he's also a tool) so that on top of the harrassment really makes me wish an alternative existed that just took the money and spent it wisely. I don't know.

How can I just donate the money, be a member, but not get anything but one renewal reminder once a year? Or at the very least, no action required correspondence? Is that possible? If so, how do I do it?

I can't be the only person annoyed by this.
 
Quite the tirade there. I agree it's annoying but you are not obligated for anything. Have you tried speaking with someone at HQ about taking you off their mailing list?
 
I got it. Wife and I watched it, discussed the techniques demonstrated, and put it on the shelf. I may send them a thank you note as I consider any and all unsolicited merchandise sent to me by anyone to be a gift.
 
I've made sure they do NOT have my current address, since they send reams of unwanted material. I have no idea why they think this sort of thing is good for membership.
 
Got the same coin and dvd a couple years ago. i agree. a pita. i think the law states you are under no obligation to return unsolicited mail. but i may be, and often am, wrong. i never watched the dvd and held on to it(lost it) for about a year. finally found it and returned it just to stop the weekly and increasingly whiney "please return our dvd" letters. i actually let my membership lapse for over a year over it. over course that just starts the bi-monthly "please come back. we miss you" letters. i eventualy rejoined. i wrote "quit sending me junk mail" across the membership form. surprisingly it worked.
 
It says right in the letter if you don't want it, send it back. I bought four of them before I decided that I had spent enough money. I just sent the fifth one back and haven't heard another word.

I realize that most of the time these things are a hassle, but if you go into it already thinking it is, then you'll make it a hassle. Just send it back, they clearly state how to do it and supply you with a return envelope with postage paid.

If you go to their website, there is an option to just donate money.

Or you could just buy stuff from the NRAStore ;-)
 
In the snout of time you spent on this post, you could have sent an email asking to be removed from their mailing list.

You don't have to receive their email, either. Mark as spam and all future emails will go there as well.

I do agree that such silly marketing gimmicks should be beneath the NRA. If I cared that much, I would call or email and tell them so.
 
I recieved a unsolicited video from them years ago. I kept the video, ignored their requests to either pay or sent it back and have not recieved another video since. My junk mail from the NRA has stopped also.

Do you suppose they got mad at me for not paying for the video?

I don't understand you getting so out of sorts considering all the other junk mail you recieve daily.
 
Wow, chill out. I'm all for the NRA, but I think they spend too much money trying to get more money. Whatever. I just don't appreciate having stuff sent that implies that I have an obligation to send it back if I don't want it. If you don't get that, I can't really explain it to you.

Consider it a gift? I suppose, that is what crossed my mind. Just ignore it. I just can't recall if they have our card number and whether or not they can just charge for it. That I most certainly am not cool with.

I called to get off the list, but it took YEARS to get USAA to stop sending me reams of junk. I'd rather get someone on the phone, but I was too late today.

Anyway, I'm obviously not the only one that thinks they go too far. Most of us just want a membership to help out, not to make it our life's purpose to support the NRA and collect trinkets and such.

I certainly feel the same way. However, the experts at fund-raising that they employ obviously don't agree with me, and have the balance sheets to prove it. If it didn't bring the dollars in the door, they'd have quit long ago.

Whatever. I just don't appreciate having stuff sent that implies that I have an obligation to send it back if I don't want it. If you don't get that, I can't really explain it to you.

I agree, again. I think it is unseemly and borderline extortion (not by threat, but by implication of duty or requirement). It bugs the crap out of me.

... But it brings money in the door...

As others said, the very best way to handle it is to simply not respond at all. Don't send it back, watch it, burn it, throw it away, use it as a target, whatever. They will not send you another one. (And if they do... well, you know what to do!)

Of course, you can always call them up one time and ask to receive not one more piece of junk mail. 95% of the time, it only takes once.
 
I am an NRA Benefactor member because for the most part I appreciate what they do on my behalf. That doesn’t mean that I am blindly loyal either.
The NRA threw me and my brother machine gunners under the bus in 1986 when they supposedly gave up a little liberty for a little security - bad business doing that sort of thing. Just another way of chipping away at our 2A rights.

Back to the DVD - I had the exact thing happen to me as BSA1 and responded in the same fashion. No more “see if you like it” items, but the contests, polls and requests for contributions keep-a-comin’ and they all find their way into the trash unread. I do however read their alerts and s-can the contribution requests.

The NRA is the loudest and most feared voice we have for gun rights and even given their faults we still should support them,but send the annoying stuff to the circular file with the other junk mail…..Doc

I checked myself off some of the email offers. It just takes a select and click. remember some people do like the offers and feel they get a benefit from them. I did not and opted out. no big deal.

Years ago, I started receiving unsolicited mail from Handgun Control/Brady campaign. I realized it cost them money to send it, so I said nothing. I regarded it as "enemy" intel.
 
I have unsolicited books,vhs tapes and dvds from the NRA, NAHC and Outdoor Life magazine. Some I kept and paid for,some I kept and didn't pay for and some I sent back. In the case of NRA and NAHC,I sent a note to remove me from the mailing list and all such mailings stopped completely. I sent Outdoor Life a very nice "thank you" note for the gift. Never heard anything else about it.
 
Just had a thought while reading this latest NRA thread.

I know having thoughts is dangerous especially being as its me having them, but then the voices have been quiet lately.

Being as we have almost a weekly thread about the NRA it surprises me that one of the folks in the NRA doesn't respond with a post, preferably someone in the higher offices.

This is your legal right and exactly what I do.

I am a strong supporter of the NRA but I dislike this kind of campaign immensely, and never respond to it in any way.
 
Got the same thing a few days ago.
If you read the letter you'll see the following
"since you didn't ask for this special dvd, you don't have
to participate or send it back and can consider it as a free
gift"

being administered under a licensing arrangement by
TN Marketing LLC a for-profit company.

Edit....also not too pleased by the recent trends of NRA,
both in their marketing and their editorial positions.
But overall don't see anyone better so I keep up
my membership.

You can email or call NRA customer service and ask to be placed on the "do not solicit" list. All I get from them now is American Rifleman, and reminders when it is time to renew.
 
I received the dvd and because it was from NRA I sent it back in the return postage provided. A month later I started getting letters demanding I pay or send it back. I got a few of the demands before I called NRA and got them to have it stop.
Prior to that I had called and had myself removed from the mailing list. That worked about as well. I still get more stuff from them than anyone including credit offers, lol.
That said, I still support the NRA.
 
Enjoy it if you want. If not send it back and tell them you don't want anymore mail. It's that simple.
 
got mine

they sent me one, i took it as a "free gift". they bothered me for months with mail wanting the thing back or to pay. screw them, you do not send out free stuff then bug the hell outta them when you dont get an answer.

i finally sent them an email and told them that the harrassment stops NOW and to completely remove me from all of their databases. got a quick reply that they did just that. maybe next time they will know better. Jeeze i hate that!!! rant over.:cuss:
 
Heck I get mailings wanting me to take out credit cards, from Ace Hardware & Do It Now wanting me to buy snow shoves, from our local high school telling me all about the programs available, I'm 68 years old, why do I care, letters from our town telling me all about soime new dog walk or something, letters from the local utilities company wanting me to buy insurance, letters from the AARP wanting me to join and they're anti gun, this list goes on and on.

Heck, I'm getting so old some of the stuff is as interesting as the catalogs I used to send for when I was 8 or 10 years old.

My monthly/bi monthly fundraiser from the NRA is of little consequense.
