Hello all!

I have been shooting for a while now, and own quite a few rifles/shotguns, but no pistols. My wife has agreed to let me take my CPL class for my birthday this year, which is quickly approaching. I live 5 miles from Williams Gun Sight (check them out) and they offer a great deal for classes.

The time has come to buy a handgun for HD, some carry, and range fun. So far I've looked at the S&W poly's (Sigma,SD,M&P) A few Rugers, and a CZ 75...which I really enjoyed. I'm having a hard time finding a used CZ, so I was wondering if anybody had any ideas of comparable firearms, and prices.

Thanks so much!

Polymer pistols are hard to beat these days. They are inexpensive, light weight, reliable, and generally have high capacities.

Along with the aforementioned S&W polymers, Glock 17 & 19 would be good choices, as would be Springfield's XD line.

Somewhere between $300-$500. I have seen people on this forum saying the picked up a cz75 for as little as $350, but I have yet to find one under $400.

  1. Welcome!
  2. Were I looking for an affordable CZ, I'd start hanging out at the CZ forum and looking on the on-like auction sites; I'd also look a long time before making a decision: there's more to learn than may be immediately apparent.

How do auctions work? I will definitely check out the cz forum, but I am still way open to suggestions.

The cz 75b is a great pistol and would be a good choice, you can get a new one at Budsgunshop for just under 500 I think. If you don't mind a older surplus cz 75 gunsamerica (which is like ebay for guns) always has some in the 275 and up range.

I bought a Ruger SR9c back in October, and I have been very happy with it. One of the neat things about it is the 2 different size magazines that come with it. The 10 round magazine makes it fairly easy to conceal and the larger 17 rd. magazine makes it a good choice for the range and for home defense. I've never had any reliability issues with it, and the accuracy is very good for me.
Good luck!

Thompson, how does that process work? Some of those guns look pretty rough... has anyone here ever purchased one? I'm going to try and go to the range tomorrow and try a few more.

What's your question? about buying them online or about the auction like site? Online is pretty straight forward you buy it and pay for it than they send it to the FFL that you choose and you pay the FFL for paperwork. Gunsamerica I couldn't tell you as I have never bought anything from them but I would think it's about the same.

as would be Springfield's XD line.

+1 I would recommend handling one of the XD's at least once just to see if it is fit. I didn't like the look but after "test firing" one of these at my local range I couldn't ignore how great it felt and functioned in my hands.

Well, I shot a sigma yesterday, and I loved the way it felt...but I didn't car for the trigger. I called a local dealer today and asked about used CZ's. he laughed at me, and said good luck. 75b's are selling for 400-450 used around here whenever they do come in.

I'm thinking about trying the SD9. From what I've read its kind of in between the sigma and the M&P. Anybody own one? I'm headed to a range tomorrow that rents them out. Also going to try a ruger they have.

Thanks for all of the suggestions btw, you guys are awesome.

I had to sell my CZ75 Compact because the grip was too wide, and trigger too far forward.

My hands were just too small for the gun, I would have to really reach for the trigger and it threw off my shot, plus I would have to shift the gun to operate the slide lock because I would be trying to hold it so I wouldn't have to reach for the trigger as much.

I even put thinner grips on it but still found I was reaching for that trigger.

It was my 2nd handgun purchased, it was a group buy I participated in many years back.... I think it was a group buy I found here at THR.

I just did a search on GunBroker.com and found over 40 CZ 75's
I have bought and sold guns on that site with no problem. As an earlier post said "the Ebay for guns".
Just register, bid and then follow the rules which are send an FFL from your local gun shop and payment by the designated terms. Be prepared to pay your local gun shop $10-25 for the transfer unless you find a gun in your home state.
In that case you may be able to arrange a face to face sale.

Thanks everyone or the advice. I went out this weekend, and after shooting everything i could withing my price range, I went with a ruger p95. I love it. I have huge hands and that thing fits me like a glove. I will still check out Gunbroker when it comes time to take my cpl, as I really doubt I will carry something that huge.

thanks again!
