Hey all,
I've got a 2 year old XDm9. It's been a great gun. Accurate, easy to shoot, takes any ammo. That is until last week. I popped in a mag of PMC, which I've shot hundreds of rounds of with no problem, racked it, pulled the trigger, and "click". No boom! Racked it, ejecting the un-fired round, and noticed that the striker DID hit the primer. This went on for 5-6 rounds until I put the gun away. My buddy put those same rounds (the ones that the striker hit but did not fire) into his Glock & they all fired.

Has anyone experienced this with an XDm? I thought these guns were unstoppable, much like a Beretta 92 or a Glock. I don't think I can trust this as a carry gun anymore.

Thoughts? Opinions?

no bueno.

I haven't heard of that happening. Do you have an approximation of how many rounds you have sent through the firearm. I would also have a hard time carrying it if that happened as well. I love my glocks.

I don't know about xdm pistols but xd pistols have a roll pin the goes through the slide to retain the firing pin. The roll pins have been known to break from extensive dry firing. Maybe the pin broke and is dragging on the firing pin. Just a guess.

Have you ever had the firing pin out to check it and clean the channel.

Rinspeed nailed the problem I had with my XD9. I removed the striker and cleaned the channel, but still got mildly indented primers. Once I removed the firing pin itself, and cleaned it and its channel thoroughly, I have run many hundreds of rounds trhrough it without a FTF. As far as a cracked firing pin retainer is concerned- possible but, unless you've dry fired it a ton of times, it's not likely. Possible, but not likely.

Thanks y'all. I started tinkering with it & decided I would cause more harm than good by messing with the striker & firing pin. Looked in the owners manual & saw that lifetime warranty, so I think I'll take it back to the shop & have them send it in to Sprinfield for me. I know my limits, and am not afraid to admit it!

Really do appreciate all the info, though.

Had the same thing happen to a guy while I was running RO for an IDPA match. I suggested cleaning the firing pin and channel as he had never done that in the few years he had owned the pistol, and perhaps even replacing the firing pin spring since they are cheap. That should solve your problem.

I have shot a few guns where the firing pin hole got so dirty it actually deflected the firing pin and it caused strikes at the edges of the primer, causing FTF problems.

Nope, haven't had that happen with my M&Ps, other S&Ws, Glocks, SIGs, or STI. Caspian neither.

What's your approximate round count?

if i was a betting man i would put my money on needing to clean out your firing pin..i have heard of this with many different pistols including glock, rugers, smiths, taurus...gotta keep them clean...and yes if you have a warranty you might as well use it because they will void it if they think you tinkered with it yourself

Yes, I field strip & clean it after almost Every shooting session. Exception would be if I only fired a mag or 2.

Have never messed with cleaning the trigger area, though.

I hope y'all are right & it's just a dirty striker / firing pin area. We'll let the good folks at Springfield determine. Thanks again for the replies.

Your call, but I'd never send a gun back to the manufacturer before I'd done something so basic as to check the firing pin channel to see if it was clean. That's kinda like having your vehicle towed to the Ford dealership for warranty service because you left the lights on and the battery died.

I would use a air spray canister to spray over the friring pin and into the ocking indicator piece behind the slide. Amybe add a drop of oil into the firing pin spring to loosen thengs up after. Yes, it definitely looks like the firing pin is not strking the primer hard enough. Good luck!

Yeah, good call there. Somethin just aint quite right there.

you can get out the striker assembly, the only concern is that it is springy and has a tendency to fly away if you fumble the removal

just do it in a pillowcase or big plastic bag, removing the striker is hardly advanced maintenance or a modification that would call for warranty voiding.

and as far as "not sure if it is a suitable carry gun" - if it was malfunctioning with your carry ammunition, it might be a concern, but with cheap range/plinking stuff? That's a reason to troubleshoot and maybe do some intermediate maintenance, not to scrap the gun.

Hi guys. Update:

Took it in to the shop where I bought it (wonderful folks - if you need a recommendation for a gun store in Savannah GA just ask). Owner had a guy disassemble & clean the pertinent parts. It was the striker area that was all gummed up. I didn't realize that I wasn't supposed to oil that area.

They spent 20 minutes with the gun and with me, showing me what to do & what not to do when cleaning next time. All this with a shop FULL of customers!! There are still good people out there willing to earn a customer's business!

Thanks again for all the helpful info.
