My rifle calibers are mostly 30-30 or 7.62x39 with the exception of a mosin. Lately a remington 700 w/ a nikon scope showed up at work and it's really caught my eye. I lean towards wood stock but this one's synthetic and it suits well.

Anyway heres my question, my prefered shots are generally 100 yards or less, but I figured i'd like something to reach out a little bit more. Would this be a foolish choice? Used for coyotes to hogs to maybe deer or worse come to worse.....zombies. lol don't think i've ever used that phrase before:)

I recently 'retired' a 1959 vintage Winny model '94 in .30-30 in favor of a .308 and I couldn't be happier. Haven't made a shot over 125 yards with it, but it has been a real joy to shoot. I say go for it!

BTW, my gun is a Marlin XS7 with a synthetic stock, and I never worried about it on those drizzly mornings this past winter on the way to the stand.

I wish I knew exactly which model it is so I can post it. I'm thinking maybe it's an sps model? But the ones i've seen have a mag or floor plate this one has neither. Theres so many varieties it's hard to sort them out:)

UpTheIrons........Hows is the recoil compared to a win 94? I won't retire my 30-30's, one is my truck gun. A win 94 with an old side mount scope. It bangs around the truck 24-7 and the scope is always close enough:)

Pretty sure the army used the .308 (well, OK... 7.62x51mm, but it's practically the same) for shooting targets at a lot more than 125 yards away.

308s can reach out far beyond 100 yards with ease. With high BC hunting bullets their effective range from deer is about 550yd (though trajectory sucks past about 350), so yeah I would say it fills your need by a healthy margin.

Here is one of my favorite .308`s, just because it is so rugged...............308 will serve you well.

The 308 is awesome. Great stopping power, excellent bullet choices, fantastic reloading flexibility and relatively easy on barrells (for a high powered rifle). The 308 is a work horse.

Nothing fancy about the 308, medium speed, medium caliber, mid range energy, but that means it also does not have to deal with the downsides of extream calibers like fierce muzzle blast, heavy recoil, muzzle breaks, or very heavy rifles. I liked my XS-7 in 308, but my friend liked it more and bought it from me, now I have a 30-06, not "better' or "worse" just a little different in it's ability to use heavier bullets (200gr+) which BTW are not needed for deer.

I shoot hogs with my .308 all the time, 50-100 yard shots. It will blow thru the shield on a 250lb boar no problem. I would say it is plenty unless you need to reach out past 300 yards point blank maybe an upgrade is needed.

My brother and I were shooting a home made gong at 600 yards last weekend. With my cheep savage edge I could put about 70% of my rounds on the 10" gong.

They still had enough energy to punch a clean hole through 1/4" sheet metal at that distance. I would not hesitate to shoot any north American big game animal at 100 yards with a 308.
