Choosing between a S&W 39-2 and Sig p6

i got a 39-2 and it is a good all around gun. don't know anything about the sig.

either will do everything you need them to. See which one fits better and go with it. That being said, I owned a 39-2 and in a moment of weakness sold it. I regret not still having it.

I love my 39-2s... that's why I have two of them...

For range work ether will treat you fine I'd go with which ever feels better in my hand.

For defensive purposes i think the Smith has a mag safety which would rule it out for me. I'm not for sure about the P6 but none of my sigs that I have had have a mag safety. I wont carry a gun for defense that has a mag safety (just my preference).

Man that will be tough. I have both 39-2 and P225. And even though I'm a big Sig fan (love my 226s), I enjoy shooting 39-2 just a tap more than 225.

39-2 is truly a fine master piece.

If you can find a reliable S&W, I'd go with that. But why not a 639 or 3906? Back in the late 70s or early 80s one magazine published a story to the effect of why a $49 Raven .25ACP is better than a $220 S&W 39/59.


I'd love to have a 639, but I have a 3906. The guns are astoundingly good and they work very reliably. I also know people with 39s that work fine, but some of the early ones apparently were problematic.

My favorite S&W is the 659 because it fits my hand, though it doesn't fit the hands of a lot of other people. I also like the 5906 because of the higher magazine capacity. But I love my 3906.

Given my choice between the two guns, and price/condition was not a factor, I would probably go with the Model 39-2. The gun fits my hand better than a SIG P6 and I have always had a certain fascination with S&W semi-autos.

You'll probably break before either of those guns do.

M39 vs P6

I have both of these; a nickle plated 39-2 and a P6. I like them both, alot. However, if I could only have one, I would choose the S&W model 39. It has a better trigger pull in both single and double action. Alot of holster styles to choose from. Better selection of aftermarket grips. Plus, I have never experienced hammer bite from either one. If you want to meet up so that you can try them out PM me, I just happen to have some extra ammo that we could shoot.
Seriously, let me know.

I love the grips -- both of them.

FWIW: I have an early (11/78) P6 that I really like. The only problem is the DA trigger pull. The Germans spec'd a very heavy DA pull. The DA pull can be fixed with a $5 P225 mainsping from Midway, or Wolff makes replacement springs in different weights. I think a package of several weights runs about $12. However the SA pull on my P6 is as good as the smoothed, but not lightened, SA trigger on my S&W 10-4 revolver. Very nice.

Also, while some pre-1982 P6s have trouble with HP ammo mine doesn't. I think it was rearsenaled in about 1988--the grips are dated 1988-- and I suspect the feed ramp was changed at that time by a German smith. Check the date on the one your looking at. If it is post 1982 it should eat any ammo you put in the mag.

Overall, my P6 is rock solid, functional and accurate. No misfires, no mag problems. It has nice weight and balance. I have no complaints. I live in Illinois so we don't have CCW, but, if we did, I'd install the P225 spring and carry the P6.

That said, I've always liked the 39-2. I've never owned one, but the ones I've held fit my hand well, much better than the 59 series or later S&W semis, (although I do like the M&P semis). Choosing between the two is a hard decision. The 39-2 is a more attractive gun--the P6 isn't beauty queen. If I didn't have the P6 already, I might pass the P6 by because of looks. I vaguely recall from the 80s that some 39-2s had problems, but I don't recall what the problems were--and no gun design is perfect. Either would be a good choice.
