Just out of curiosity how many of you guys carry fixed knives vs folders. Also what type of job do you have or lifestyle I suppose and do you get any interesting looks. IE if your a farmer vs stock broker. Just curious on everyone's preference. Suppose it's almost a open carry vs concealed in a way, just not necessarily for self defense.

Thanks,
Ben

You can pocket carry a small fixed blade without a problem in just about any clothing, but when you get down to a small enough blade the folder takes over as more practical in the pocket.

I carry a folder, just because it is easier with the local laws.

Here, a fixed blade knife cannot be carried concealed...it must be carried openly, usually in a sheath o the belt. At the same time, a folder, regardless of the blade length, can be carried concealed.

If you are going to carry a folder for defensive purposes, you have to learn to access it and open it quickly in a reactive manner...otherwise it is near usless

Folder most of the time due to local law permitting them to be carried concealed. I have many folders I "rotate."

Fixed blades are open carry, and I carry them when hiking or working on home improvement projects. I don't get looks for either because the knife "fits" with my appearance and behavior.

Folder, typically.

Carrying a fixed blade of a useful length would mean carrying in a belt scabbard, and that isn't suitable for my mostly urban coming and going.

If I'm going into a rural environment, fixed and folder.

I go back an forth between fixed/folder, although I own more folders than edc appropriate fixed blades. My edc fixed blades are "customs" from small manufacturers/custom makers. I have one in the mail from TRC Knives as we speak.

I live in the rural midwest and I carry a folder when going to work or going to the bigger city but our nearest small town of 10k people tolerates me with a fixed blade on my hip. I've walked into the bank, Walmart, township offices, etc wearing jeans and boots and a fixed blade in plain sight with no second glance or reaction. I don't carry a giant tactical assault knife though. Sometimes a custom 3" drop point or more commonly a Roselli carpenters knife.

I wear either this:

Or this:

...Under an untucked t-shirt, using a Teklok to attach to my belt. I work in an office, no one notices usually, if they do they don't care too much. I stopped wearing a folder clipped to my pocket because the damned things chew up pants pre-maturely. I usually do have a Spyderco Delica inside of my pocket.

If I'm wearing pants without a belt (like gym shorts) I tuck the ESEE-3 into my waistband (friction holds it put) and tie a piece of cord to something (like the drawstring). When drawn, the sheath comes out with the knife but when the cord reaches its limit the knife springs free from the sheath.

Usually, 90+ percent of the time, it's a multitool or other folder on the right hip. The other 10 it's a big fixed blade, 7" or better. Do get the odd look now & then with the fixed blade, but that's mostly from flatlanders passing through. This is the sticks with lots of farmers, ranchers, & loggers so to the locals it ain't no thang.

I really like your question regarding stock broker or farmer. I fit into both categories depending on the day of the week or when I feel like going to my office. Analogy aside, I normally carry sheathed fixed blades. Left pocket, tip up, right pocket tip down. I also carry folders, normally a Benchmade 9100 auto. Today my Chris Reeve large Sebenza Ti with cocobolo inlays arrived. Bday present from my wife. What a nice knife!
My fixed blade EDC are Spartan Blades Phrike, CQB Tool and Enyo and Reeve Professional Soldier.
Great thread. Thanks.

Jim

RatDrill: that Bark River is a good looking knife.

I carry a Harvey King three finger fixed blade everyday. LH side on the belt blade forward in a RH sheath. I also carry a Case medium stockman RH pocket.

I like my Opinel #10 carried in a flashlight holder on a daily basis but occasionally I carry an Opinel #12 in a homemade leather sheath.

I love tha HK knife, will have to add one to the list...

This thresd reminds me of when I met Bob Loveless at his shop and showed him what I had made. I asked him about never making folders (he did made blades for some) and he said "Even though I never made them you should because most people don't carry fixed blades". I never did make folders but it seems he was right.

I do tend to carry 2-3 folders, and a fixed blade daily. The small fixed blade ( 2 15/16" blade length, max length to carry concealed here).

I tend to use the fixed blade the most , folders are carried mostly due to being a knife nutt, but the small lockback will draw less attention in an office environment, so I will use that when I need to be very discreet.

I carry mostly folders though I would prefer to carry a small sheath knife. I love the convenience of a fixed blade, with no hidden areas for dirt, easy to clean, no blade to open or worry about closing, and the general rugged construction. I have a couple of small pocket size puuko's I experiment with, and love them, but the law says no.

But the Peoples Republik Of Maryland has weird knife laws. There's virtually no limit on blade size for any knife that folds, and meets the states definition of a "pen Knife". As long as it's not a switchblade, then it's a 'pen knife, and an Opinel number 12 in the pocket is legal, but a Buck Hartsook with a one and three quarter inch blade is illegal.

So I carry folders.

I've always preferred fixed blades, but usually carry a folder.

I'm not sure about fixed blade laws here, so I err on the side of caution. I have two fixed blades I wear on my property/camping. One of them I made myself!

I used to have a double bladed boot knife, it had a silver accented sheath and matching handle. I used to carry it everywhere, till someone stole it. :fire:

EDIT: I'm just a blue-collar nobody. FWIW

Mr. King is a thr member now. I will be meeting him this weekend at the denver knife show, and i am really looking forward to it!
