I see all different brands and prices, is there one that works better than the rest ? Is it more for cover scent or an attractant ? Do they work at all or is it just snake oil ? -thanks

i have used it for years and never had any success with it. I consider it to be snake oil and I wont pay for it. It is intended to be an attractant.

this is a quote from Dr. Deer James Kroll
■ Scent lures don't work: Kroll's research indicates that deer are curious animals that
may stop to investigate a new odor in their home territory, but the deer are just as likely
to be attracted to human urine or the interior smell of a new car than any commercially
marketed sex lure. Sex lures are billed as urine from an estrous doe.

Scent used in combination with calls can be useful IMHO.

As far as the above post, I agree 100% when it comes to does and even young bucks. Fuel oil, farm tractor, chain saw... they will come check it out, whether you see them or not.

Just so everyone knows, I had to try my best to write this post. I had something totally different (and not THR) in mind at first.

Used it for 50 years.

I used a dozen different brands over the years and finally settled on BuckStop 200 proof. I have never had a deer spook from it and it has stopped several deer in their tracks long enough for me to get a shot off.

We even made a believer out of my buddies son who was a real doubting Thomas. When he finally gave in and used it he had a buck trail him to his stand and lick the bottom rung of the ladder. He said that he would never doubt us again.

Noone sells it around home and I have to order it online. I think that I got my last order (10 bottles) from Bowhunters Warehouse.

I have never used it as an attractant, I have always used it as a cover scent. The best way to attract a deer, is two deer fighting.............

+1 on the "snake Oil" I have only seen it make deer go far around me. If it was local estrus like from an early shot doe, I would think it may work.
I always use Fox piss and it seems to settle them down as they come up. I've seen the deer actually looking for the fox and cricling my tree. Usually spray some waist high at the bottom of my tree and some on the soles and toes of my boots from the walk from the truck to the tree.

I don't think it works. I've used it in an area absolutely full of bucks and had no real increase in activity. I don't think it really hurts anything. Maybe if you get the random deer that finds it interesting it will help.

If you're hunting in an area With high doe numbers it will be even less effective in my opinion.

i, for one, believe that they work. i have used code blue for the last few years and have had numerous deer sniff right on end to the scent bombs i hung.

Dosent seem to matter what I rub on my hunting buddies coat, nothing seems to bring in a big one:evil:

Strangely every big deer I have shot came in while I was smoking a cigerette.

I think they learn to frequent a area from food/salt ectera then will investage a strange sent.

Supposedly "doe" urine is urine from dairy cows with a small amount of deer urine added to keep the labeling truthful.

Think about it. How many tame deer would you have to have backed into a "pee" trough to satisfy the market? Does only come into heat one time a year for a couple days and only come into heat more than once if they are NOT bred the first time. The stuff, if real, would have to cost as much as the most expensive perfume to be profitable.

It works but, like anything else, it has to be the right combination of timing, a horny buck, and a bit of luck. I've killed deer that have come directly into estrous scent.

One downside is that I've seen it spook does which, ultimately, can lead the bucks away from you.

As with anything, if there are a lot of bucks in the area, you're more likely to lure them in with scents / rattling / calling. There has to be a density of deer in your area to increase the chance of ANY tactic bringing you success.

Two brands I've had success with are "Golden Estrous" from one of the national companies, and "Buckeye Scents" which are located here in Western NY. I've had multiple bucks come into both of these.

I had some in my pocket and forgot about it. I felt something wet dribbling down my leg. I was freaking out thinking I was bleeding or something. Turned out the bottle opened and it ran down my leg. No bucks came after me. And I smelled damn funky.

once saw a show on one of the outdoor channels that had 4 differnt kinds (they hid the labels) and also for a control used human urine. What they found was there wasnt a pinch of differnce between any of it including the human urine. Its why they can use cattle urine in making it. All urine smells the same.

i have always considered it to be snake oil. i used it once, years ago. it is CERTAINLY NOT a cure all for lousy hunting location. i believe that if you do your homework correctly, you will see deer. as far as stopping one to get a shot off. a good whistle or even a squeaker from a dog toy will do the trick most of the time.

If you watch any of the hunting shows, it seems like they mostly use rattling horns to draw them in.

My father-in-law and his buddies do use grunt calls...but if you don't know when and how the deer grunt, then you will just end up running them off.

I have only been hunting for 4 years. My first deer was a 13 pointer that I got on my second day of hunting. Total beginner's luck. I wasn't even where I was supposed to be at the time. (damn near had a heart attack...and I have been hooked ever since)

I haven't been using anything lately, and to be honest...that 13 pnt...is the only for me so far. I have had a few young bucks in my sites, but decided to let them go.

Don't let the self made pros fool you. I had one tell me that the best call was a 5 gallon feed bucket banging on the side of the truck.
