I live in Tennessee and our house has a full basement, I want to store at least 1 handgun in a small safe in the basement, however, the humidity is very high in the long summer months, so, in your opinion which gun would handle humidity better a SS Ruger SP101 or a Glock/Walther P99 type pistol ( already have 3 mentioned guns).?

We have a dehumidifier but I am terrible about draining the pan that fills up at least twice a day, and we travel a lot.

Thanks,

Sigbear

I doubt it would make a difference between the Ruger and the Glock, Glocks finish is as good or better than SS.

We have a damp basement with a dehumidifier running all the time, and things that arent treated still rust. Ive found that anything Ive treated with Eezox has not rusted, and some stuff has been left alone for over a year now.

the ammo in the gun will suffer before either gun will.

I havent found that to be the case. I keep most of my ammo and do most of my reloading in the same basement.

I've never gotten any rust on either one of those specific guns. But I'd put all my chips on the Glock.

Nitrocarburized finish, nickel plating, and polymer are all superior to SS, in terms of rust resistance. And if you look at the internal parts in a Glock, it will take a lot of rust to make it stop functioning. A GP100 could easily stop functioning due to surface rust. My GP100 trigger started to get stuck, even without any rust.

I have experienced surface rust on my stainless FNX slide (only where the horrible laser engraving is done) and on the back of the grip frame of my SS 686. Places exposed to sweat. And when I got it, my 686 had some surface rust on the sides of the hammer which could have been one of the reasons it was having light strikes (though it was 99% due to the backed out mainspring screw). This rust was only visible after taking the gun apart.

This brings up another point. If the springs or other internal parts of a Glock were to rust, it would be easy to detect and to fix with an annual breakdown. With the Ruger GP100, chances are much higher that you're only going to start digging when/if a problem actually starts, and fixing it will take a lot longer.

I've never had a spot of rust on any Glock I've ever owned.

I did have to clean up some rust spots on the front sight of my SP101 after getting it wet on a camping trip, never anything on the main parts of the gun though.

Rust from sweat is quite different from rust caused by humidity.
Rust from sweat is caused by the salt in sweat. Stainless steel alloys rely on passivation to keep them from rusting.
Chlorine and chlorine compounds prevent passivation from occurring.
A gun carried concealed will rust quicker, due to the salt in sweat.

Where I live, humidity from the high 90%s up to 100% is common in the summer.
I've had blued carry guns rust when carried concealed, yet when I open carried on my property, they didn't rust at all. Even when I was carrying them a lot more and a lot longer (in the open).

I ran a drain line from my humidifier. Got tired of draining it every day, sometimes twice a day. Never had to empty it again.

I have NEVER seen a Glock rust. The closest I've seen one get is being underwater for a while, and getting some surface rust on the spring that wiped right off.

Love 'em or hate 'em you gotta admit when it comes to corrosion resistance the Glocks are as good as it gets.

I've never had any of my stainless guns rust. Then again, I maintain them.
The best protection would be to store it in one of the VCI bags when you put it in the basement.
BTW, basements are really bad places to keep guns.

As mentioned above, a Goldenrod in the safe, and no problems;)
My safe is in the basement, never had a gun rust, even before I put a Goldenrod in it.... Just oil them up

One of the main reasons I gave Glock a shot was due to humidity and working around chlorinated air. I've never had a spec of rust on any Glock I've owned.

I have, and both were mine. The one part on a Glock that usually loses its finish is the slide stop. Thats where I got rust on two of mine.

I maintain them too, but I still got rust. It was under the grips on a couple of 1911's that got carried a good bit in warm and humid summers.

When you sweat like a pig, and your gun is always with you, there probably isnt one that wont rust at some point. Even my one 1911 that was hard chromed showed some fine rust at and under the grips.
