The title pretty much says it all. Surface rust here is a pain. I have been wanting a good AK lately but would really like to start converting all my guns over to SS and synthetic stocks.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have no idea about SS, but what about one of those gold plated ones so many dictators have had from time to time :)

I am sure you could get a coating that will protect your firearms (AK's) from rust. As to SS, well I have never seen one, you could get them chrome plated. But not sure how that would look, now a nice gold AK that would turn heads.

Haha oh to have the funds for a gold coating! Im not trying to bling it out...just trying to keep it safe from the elements. I hate dealing with the rust coating and being worried pitting and such.

I knew some hunters from down that way,
(Seward and Homer) that had their high end
bolt actions hard chromed. That was during
the early 1970's. Never heard of an AK in
stainless.:D

Tetra Gun Lube seems to help and it is thick enough to stay in place. Although it smells like and old car trunk....
I too live in a sea-side Alaskan town. Years ago when I lived near Petersburg, my house was an old logging-camp float house. Things were a touch salty in there.... But fishing off the back deck was an added benefit.

Might consider a good coat of DuraCoat and a silicone gun sleeve for when you're storing it or to insert in your mount etc. Would do wonders for your predicament.

You might want to consider the coating or chroming suggestions. There are some recent photos of AK's with rust that were captured from Somali pirates that shows how much rust is on the gun but the bayonet which is hard chromed hasn't been affected.

I rebarreled and restocked this 1935 vintage M-98 Mauser back in 1972.

Just blued steel and Walnut. Back around 1974 it was in a boat that sank and we could not recover it until the tide went out again. I washed it out in fresh water from a creek and oiled it in the field. Then hunted with it for the next week.
It has been on 40 or so hunting trips since then... In rain, snow and salt water. Proper cleaning and oiling has worked so far......

There is not one piece of stainless anywhere... or is there any rust.....

Classic arms used to regularly sale chromed AKs. I don't know if that is something they still have from time to time nor do I know anything about the quality of the chrome job.

Take a regular AK and send it to Mac's Shootin Irons and have it tuff coated. He does a poly over park coating that is tough as nails. http://www.shootiniron.com/

I have had one he did over 10 years ago and it still looks great. Plus he does a fluff and buff that comes with the work he does which made mine smooth as glass.

Robar NP3

+1 on a NP3 electroless nickel from Robar Industries. I've heard nothing but excellent reviews from owners that have had the NP3 Robar finish applied to their firearms.
