A friend of mine has been offered a full size Taurus .45 ACP for $300 and is tempted to buy it. It would be a face to face private sale from a contact made while at the range. He looked at the gun and all he can tell me is that it looks like it's brand new. He has no idea how old it is, except that the guy selling it said he had it a very short time and bought it from the original owner. He had the impression that the original owner may have only had it a few years. The reason he gave for selling it is that it costs too much to shoot and he wants to get a 9mm instead. The seller also said that it's functioned fine for him and is as accurate as he can hold. It comes in the plastic factory box, but I don't know if it has any papers, and I don't know how many magazines are included.

My inquiries for the brain trust that is THR are:
*What kind of price is $300 for such a gun?
*If anyone has had any experience with a Taurus .45 ACP, good or bad, please include the details and I'll pass the info on to him.

Thanks very much.

Any idea which exact model? Taurus makes several chambered for .45 ACP from subcompacts up to full-sized 1911 clones. Which exact model would better give us an idea of what sort of deal you're getting.
I stay away from Taurus as I've had good and bad luck with them.

I havea PT111 in 9mm that works 100% and had a PT845 that went back 4 times and never did work right.

If its a PT145 or 745 it should be a good firearm however 300 is asking a bit much if used.

If its the 800 series 845 I would say pass.

Mine would not drop the mags free even when empty, would also fail to feed/ return to battery at least 2 times per magazine with three different mags. It went back three times for this.

When it did finally start to feed the slide stop broke off, after sending it to the factory they replaced the slide stop and the malfunctions started again.

I sold it back to the shop I bought it from and never looked back.

Sorry, I don't have any information regarding the model. All I could get from my friend was that it was a full size all metal 1911 clone. I knew it wasn't much upon which to ask for information, but it's all I had. He only looked at it quickly and held it, giving the person his phone number in case he decided to sell. He just got called today offering it for sale.

I was just looking for opinions on whether $300 was a good price, and experiences with full size Taurus .45 ACPs so I could give him some input based on actual knowledge. It would be a start for his evaluation as to whether he should proceed any further and call the seller back to perform a more thorough examination.

Again, thanks for any contributions.

I have a PT145 which I bought for $300, used, which in Georgia last year was a very good price. Flawless performance. Easy carry every day.

Thanks for the link Canuck-IL. I'll let him know about it and recommend that he call him tomorrow and to get more information, including the model and serial number (if possible).

I'd buy it. Remember that Taurus has a lifetime warranty for ANY owner of their firearms and not just the first owner.

If there is an issue shipping will be all that has to be paid. If you've got a friendly FFL that will work with you, they can ship it for a very minor fee.

All I could get from my friend was that it was a full size all metal 1911 clone.

That actually does help an awful lot.
If that's the case, whether it's blued or stainless, if it's in decent condition and working properly I'd say $300 is a great price.
