Good day. Hard to believe it's been over a year since I was last here. :p

Some idiot (who shall remain nameless because my ego is fragile) forgot to properly clean his Saiga after firing corrosive ammunition in it a few months ago. Come back from school for Christmas, get it out, and there is a TON of rust on the muzzle brake, which I ordered about 2 years ago from Dinzag (IIRC, the guy who owns that shop was a member here... is that still the case?).

Well, not knowing what else to do, I dip it in vinegar over night, and that did get rid of some of the rust. It also got rid of the blueing on the brake. I then cleaned off most of the rest of the rust with a Dremel with a wire brush bit.

Basically, I need to put a finish back on this thing at some point so it matches the rest of the rifle. What's a good choice for this? I know there's blueing kits you can buy at stores but I'm not sure how appropriate this is for this particular application.

Attached is a helpful picture of what rust may or may not look like. I'm currently soaking the brake in vinegar to get all of the blueing off.

Its and AK, a little rust won't hurt anything, and it adds character :)

Its pretty easy to try some cold blue, it'll be so caked with carbon after a little shooting I don't think you'll need to worry about getting much of a color match.

When I converted my Saiga Birchwood Casey cold blue was a pretty good match to the original finish to touch up under the wishbone trigger plate that gets removed.

Degrease it thoroughly, 95% alcohol works well, heat it with a heat gun or hair dryer and then apply the cold blue. Its called cold blue, but it works a lot better if the parts are too hot to comfortably touch when applied.

I'm currently soaking the brake in vinegar to get all of the blueing off.

I think you are making a lot of extra work for yourself, and its really hard to get an even finish over a large area with cold blue.

Eh, I like the Gun-Kote idea. One of these days I'll save up the cash to get the rifle media blasted and get the whole thing done at once.

By the way, what's the running cost on something like that?
