Looking for a brake for an AK. I want something that will reduce recoil and muzzle climb.

What are some good choices? I found this Bulgarian one on Kvar's site. Does anyone have one?

I have also been looking at the AK 74 style brakes. However, I have read a bunch of stuff about how some of them are junk and are not made with the two expansion chambers, etc. I was also wondering if anyone knows how these different brakes compare? Or is there not much difference between the different styles?

The slant brake on an AKM is useful only really for 1. full auto, and 2. trying to keep the rifle looking authentic

If you are looking for practical over keeping it authentic, I would suggest going with an Ak-74 style. They make them in US made versions, quite cheaply, and they do work alright at what they are supposed to do.

Check out this one from Cope's, about 3/4 of the way down their page ($15) --

What kind of AK is it and want is the part count? U.S. Sec. 922r compliant part

Thanks for the reminder. The slant brake is a compliance part on mine. So, I guess I will go with a US made 74 style brake.

I shoot lefty, is the 74 style brake designed specifically for to offset for right handed shooters?

I like the price on that one from cope's. Is there a specific one that I should look at?

Yes but it really only does anything when you're full auto. One round at a time it's not good for much but the look.

As I've posted elsewhere, here, (and will probably post some more), that is a piece of garbage. It has no expansion chamber or any other feature that makes the commie AK74 brake work so well.

For a good US made Ak74 style brake, you can go to http://www.ak-103.com or http://www.globaltrades.com You'll need to use a 14x1 to 24mm adaptor for these, but they do work well.

That cheap one sold at copes (and other companies) only works well as a compliance part.

I haven't used the AK74-style brake on a 7.62x39 AK so I can't speak to that. I have used both a slant brake and a JTAC brake on 7.62x39, and I greatly prefer the JTAC. Does a little for felt recoil, noticeably reduces muzzle climb. All the slant brakes have ever done for me is torque the stock into my face.

I've used the AK74 style brake on a 5.56-chambered AK-pattern (SAR3) and it turns it into a very pleasant shooter. I don't think it favors right or left handed shooters.

I don't like the slant brake on my AKM...I didn't think it did much save for help a little with muzzle climb...the stock seemed to really jab my cheek bone. Where do you get a good 2 chamber design similar to the current issue russian Type H AK-74 that is US made?

I second the J-TAC 47 from Primary Weapons (formerly AK Concepts). I have an AK-74 brake, a slant brake and the J-TAC. The difference is like night and day, particularly on the muzzle rise. It's a bit pricey, but it works and it comes with a money back guarantee (I don't think they've ever had to honor it, though).

As far as compliance, you only have to replace your current brake with a US-made brake if it brings your foreign parts count up to 11. Just because it's US made doesn't mean you can't buy the true Russian AK-74 style. Your rifle has 16 parts (including the brake). How may compliance parts (total) do you have? If the answer is 7 then it's not an issue. If the brake makes 6, then you'll have to go US-made or find a trade off part. It's not an automatic, though -- it depends on the configuration of your particular rifle.

second the J-TAC 47

Yeah, the J-tac isn't cheap which is why I was looking at the slightly cheaper stuff. But, your saying that the j-tac is better than the other options? Maybe I need to give it more consideration.

Does anyone have any pics of the j-tac on a gun? I know coolness should be much less important than functionality, but if I am going to shell out $50+, it better not look stupid on the end of my gun.

I have a pic on my web page, here: http://home.comcast.net/~navy87guy/home/saiga.html

Scroll to the bottom then click the last picture for a full-size pop-up. That's the J-TAC installed on my Saiga.
