As a child I had a 1908 Brazilian Mauser, and I idiotically sheared the tip off of the firing pin. I have let the rifle sit for more than a decade, and am now interested in replacing the firing pin, but I need some information to find the right part.

1. Is the firing pin for the 1908 Mauser interchangeable with any other Mauser model? Perhaps the more common Gew 98?

2. Where can spare parts for these rifles be found? Other than a $60 "improved" firing pin from Midway, I see very few surplus parts for sale. Am I merely looking in the wrong places?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If you re-barrel a 1908 Mauser to 30-06 you'll need to have the magazine opened up to feed the longer rounds.
Mauser's converted to 30-06 also usually have a half-moon cut made in the rear of the receiver ring to clear the longer rounds when using a stripper clip to load.

The best method of lengthening the magazine is to make a cut down the front corners of the magazine box, bend the front of the magazine forward, and weld the cuts shut.

Wow, I had no idea there would be further modifications necessary to rechamber to 30-06. This rifle is something of an heirloom, so I am not going to permanently modify any parts.

So, it seems, I will be looking only for a replacement 7x57 barrel. Unfortunately, the 3 or 4 places I checked so far were sold out.

As always, thanks for the info, I really do appreciate it.

check a 30-06 round in your mag box and more than likely it will fit in your 1908 brazilian without any mods anf if it dosn't you can usually thin the front & back down with a file.
if your magbox has capture or locking screws -06 should fit, usually the single screw boxes are slightly shorter
