Picked this thing up for $300 at a local gun shop. Really wanted another rifle in 8mm Mauser, and this fits the bill greatly. I know a good bit about the rifle, but had a few questions.

Is there any way to use the original en bloc clips without permamently modifying the rifle? What bayonet models will it fit, and where can I purchase one for a good deal (it can be a repro. I'm keeping an eye on Gunbroker right now)? I've heard everything from normal mauser bayonets to any old style bayonet from that era (like a Gras or Chassepot).

Thanks.

I also have one of the 1888/05 rifles (have yet to fire it). If you have the book Bolt Action Military Rifles of the World, take a look at page 125. It shows the magazine detached from a 1888 rifle and a 1888/05 rifle. It looks like you would have to make permanent modifications

I used to own several of the old enbloc clip ones and was actually considering doing the opposite and convert it to clip feed, but gave up because it looked too complicated. If you REALLY want to use those enbloc clips, you could buy an old style triggerguard (the ones without the sides) and take out the cartridge retaining piece that that goes through the slot in the receiver. I think the clip guides would get in the way, though. Those are permanently attached with rivets and I would not recommend taking those off.

I don't think regular M98 bayonets will fit. If you want a cheap bayonet you can look for ones called german ersatz bayonets. http://worldbayonets.com/Bayonet_Identification_Guide/Germany%20Ersatz/Germany_Ersatz.html

Thanks for the info, everyone. I did some more research on Eraatz bayonets, and found that there are a very wide range of variations of them. Will they all fit this old war horse?
