while detail stripping my Bersa Firestorm .22lr i thought about how useful though uncomfortable it might be to leave the grips off so i could see how much ammo is left in the mag. Does anybody make aftermarket grips from a clear material ala Paris Theodore's ASP?. i think that might be the ultimate in tacticality, perhaps even surpassing carbon fiber or mithril. perhaps there's something among the millions of aftermarket grips available for more popular pistols?

You can get them for a 1911, but others will be hard to come by.

You could make them yourself of course. Solid grips would call for quite a bit of polishing after you shape them, but a simple solution may be to adhere a clear panel clear of PC or Acrylic sheet stock into a window that you cut out of wooden or plastic manufactured grips. I belive that some ASPs had these windowed grips as well. Just an idea.

1911s at least all that i've seen, don't have skeletonized frames like my Bersa (light 20oz, despite heavy use of cast metal parts) so you'd have to do some serious work on the frame for the clear grip concept to work. perhaps not many guns out there have skeletonized frames around the grip and thats why this isn't common.

Whaaah?

I think you are confusing a 1911 with some other pistol. Here is a typical 1911 frame (Essex from Brownells web site)

Here is the web site to buy them: http://www.plastictech-inc.com/pgrips/

Also here's a picture from Novak's web site of one of his Devel's (ASP succesor I belive) with the window grips I mentioned. These are VERY nice but I'm sure you could make some at home that look pretty good for very little money.

Well, you then modify the mag, and introduce possibilty of failure into your CCW piece. I'd interested if there were production models with both magazine with slots to see and clear grip windows.

What's the point of having see-through grips if the mag isn't see-through?
Good point :)

In the picture above of the 1911, there are witness holes so there would be some value. Wilson mag bodies (what I and MANY others use) have two witness cutouts that allow you to see all of the loaded rounds.

OK one more picture: Wilson Magazines

That would be a pretty cool idea for a Makarov, where the mags are wide open on the sides.

However, it would probably be a lot of work to make a grip (since it's all 1 piece) for a Makarov.

otomik's observation is totally correct, regarding Caspian cast frames. They are cut away under the grips to a much lesser extent than the other pics here.

I saw a home makarov grip w/ a clear window for sale on e-bay once. I think it was a modified pierce grip.
