Hey

So I was given a center point red dot scope. Don't know it, was a gift and hs a lot of features.
I have a Smith and Wesson M&P 15A, supposed to have have a f marked frot sight.

Anyways... Do I need a riser? I can't get the dot or crosshairs over or through my front sight and I can't flip up the Troy battle sight as a backup and see through the glass (it lets me see like the upper 1/4 of the glass, useless for aiming)

I'm new to the ar platform. Thanks guys.

I would have to use two of those risers. It is a longer red dot tube, more like a small scope with two scope rings.

I'll post Picts later.

It may be hard to see the BUIS through some red dot units. I am not sure what the purpose is. Run out of battery in the field? Unlikely. Sighting in? There are better ways. You could keep it simple by keeping the BUIS out.

You may still want a riser, but for a different reason. It will help your unsupported aiming, so you don't have to bury your cheek in a rather uncomfortable AR stock. The downside is, your visual axis will be more angled toward the bore axis.

So you think the half inch instead of the 3/4 inch would cowitness and shoulder properly?

The 1/2" riser likely would give you absolute cowitness and the 3/4" riser would deliver bottom third cowitness. There is much debate over which is best but I prefer the latter.

I can't say for sure without seeing the rifle, could be 1/2" or 3/4" but from what you describe that should be about right to center it.

Me; I would order both and send back what I didn't need, they are pretty cheap.

The centerline of the optic should be 1.5 to 1.6 above the flat top for an approx lower 1/3 co-witness.
