MAK-90 vs AK-47

It's exactly same as an AK-47, just with a funky stock that can be replaced with a more traditional one. Some consider them higher quality than a run of the mill AK, some don't. They can take any standard AK mag.

I own one and I have never had problems with any mags. I have used Bulgarian mags and some cheap aftermarket (all steel). They made two versions - stamped and milled. If you are looking to change the stock and you have the stamped version, I have a spare stock set laying around somewhere.

They are neutered AK's, which is to say for the most part they operate just like an AK but will not have muzzle attachment threads (which were turned down so that even if you did thread them, the diameter would be too small to use normal AK brakes) nor a bayonet lug. The rear of the receiver may, or may not, be able to take standard AK stocks. If it is slant cut, it was intended to mount a folding stock. As a result, you'd have to get a specially-made stock. Ironwood sells (or sold) them. They work fine but look a bit odd at the attachment point. If it is not slant-cut, you can take any stock designed for its specific type of receiver (stocks cut for milled receiver vs stocks cut for stamped receiver).

On the positives, the stamped receivers are thicker steel than European stamped receivers and so tend to be more rigid. Milled are, well, milled. The machining isn't stellar in the aesthetics department, but they are solid. I have owned milled Mak 90's and they were fine shooters.

As posted, they merely changed the stock and deleted a muzzle break to conform to the law at the time. I converted mine and it's great.

That's right. Not hard to do though. IIRC, you have to have 5 USA made parts to convert the Mak 90 since it has no muzzle device. (Read the link to be sure).

I used a Tapco gas rod I think. That is the only item that did not swap right out. Everything else, like the trigger assembly, was plug and play.

A milled MAK 90 is one of only two AK type rifles I have fired that I considered extremely accurate.
The other was a Bulgarian made SLR sporter.

Mine is the milled receiver, borrowed some ammo & mags from a buddy on Sunday, it shoots pretty good,:D
the trigger is very light & smooth, but I need a front sight tool (3" wide right @ 50 yds). All in all not too bad! It's the first one I've ever shot.
Great fun; now to find ammo, this shortage is like a bad joke.:banghead:

Nice Tahoe2.

There were a variety of MAK90s depending on the year imported. Some with stamped receivers, some milled, some angle cut, some fixed for 5 round mags only. They are considered one of the better AKs.

all milled maks are angle cuts and have a weird circle opening rather than the more rectangular one of normal milled aks. This meens you limited to ironwood designs for any sort of traditional stock
