I purhcased a MAK 90, and I would like to switch out the thumbhole stock with a standard AK type black pistol grip

and wood stock

How difficult would this be to do, and who sells these parts the cheapest? Thank you very much.

On a side note, how does the MAK-90 compare to the other AK clones out there like the SAR-1 and WASR-10?

Do I have to buy a stock set designed specifically for the MAK-90, or will any AK furniture fit into the gun? Thank you, and any help will be appreciated!

This is hardly very helpful but .. initially my SAR1 was a bad fit for me on irons .. couldn't get a good sight line. Found a $5 Mak thumbhole and fitted that ...... essentially not too bad of a job ... tho a bit of ''fiddle'' needed to get it right ... like re-drill for the long bolt to gain slight offset.

On that basis, could well be the AK47 std stock and grip set would be manageable .... sorta same thing - in reverse! Couldn't guarantee tho you'd have no fitting probs .. could require some ''tweaks'' but basically, I'd think you'd be able to do it OK.

Since fitting red dot to SAR have gone back to std trim .. as sight line now comfortably high.

The MAK-90 is a good AK Rifle. As good or better than the Romanian SAR.
K-Var has a lot of AK stock and a wealth of info on AK's. If you join their forums you get a discount on purchases. Gunsnet also has a lot of used AK stocks and stuff listed.

Is there a way to tell, through receiver number, if I have the square cut receiver or the angled cut one? Thank you.

My # is 94252xx

And the part numbers are 252xx

The only way to tell for sure about the rear end of the receiver on a MAK is to remove the thumbhole stock. If you have the angle cut, normal AK stocks will require fitting and filling and won't look all that great. If you want a wooden stock, Ironwood sells MAK stocks specifically made for the angled end as well as a regular square end. 922 still applies, even after the ban so if you put a US stock set on a MAK, you will still need some more US parts to make the MAK "American Made."

Yes, note that you need to add a total of 5 US parts to your MAK to be legal if it doesn't have a muzzle comp/flashhider, 6 if it does. If the stockset you end up getting is US made that can count for 3. The best route is then to get one of the cheaper $30ish US made fire control groups and you'd have the 6...

If you have a angle cut receiver you're pretty limited in stock choices, Ironwood Designs made a few wooden sets for them, don't know if they still make them.

K-var as mentioned carries some nice US made black, plum, or OD composite stock sets that are very popular. Around $85 for the set though...

You might come out cheaper to get a used stockset and US pistol grip from a SAR/WASR, they often sell for real cheap, check the for sale forum on the ak-47.net forums. You'd still need at least 4 other US parts though, other than the 3 in the FCG the gas piston is the next cheapest/easiest to change out...
