With all the stress and anxiety these last few months have cause us shooting aficionados, I figure a thread which looks back at the good ole days is right about due. And when I mean the good old days I mean WAY back to a time where most of us probably weren't even born; the wild and crazy 1980s! Tears for Fears, parachute pants and an Uzi, does that sum up the era pretty well? I couldn't tell you, I was born late 86 so I remember nothing from the 80s (and from what I can tell, probably better for it).

The nice thing about firearms is that if it works, it works; a SAA will still kill a man as good as it did over 100 years ago. What does change however are the aesthetics of advertising as well as the styles of equipment and gear from era to era and that is something I find fun to indulge in. So for you very few dinosaurs still amongst the living who were in the gun scene way back when new machine guns were still transferable, what was it like (and post pics if you have any too)?

Some things to get us in the mood...

One thing I really couldn't find was tactical gear. MOLLE this and MOLLE that, I want to see a mall ninja before the term was even coined!

In the 'old days' (still having a hard time seeing 80's as all that old...) it was ALICE.

Edit: pyro beat me to it.

Fun stuff thanks for the pictures of the ads (my dad keeps old magazines by the way for the car ads).

And maybe you guys could help me as again this was before my time. I found this gun but know nothing about it. Was a product of the 1980s and a favorite of elite special police officers, but that's all I know...

That is a Beretta M93 or Auto-9 I believe.

Robocop used one. Im not sure if it was ever an actual production gun.

Just a wild guess, but I'm guessing you're probably older than me... BTW, it's from Robocop. :)

Edit: pyro is fast! :D

That Predator Laser ad looks like it was marketed to criminals and "professionals."

Most of us weren't born in the 80"s?
lol...
I was already in the army and training for Soviets to come pouring through the Fulda Gap....ha ha ha
But movies were fun in the 80's too when it comes to guns....
To this day I still want a mini-gun.....lol

Don't forget SWAT magazine. Street sweeper shotguns, Saturday night specials, nunchaku, Journey, and Miami Vice.

It's interesting, I was looking at an AUG the other day at a store, and it really looks old fashioned. I can distinctly remember when the design seemed extremely cutting edge. Now I look at it and see an outdated scope that would be very difficult to swap out or repair

Extremely no fun if you are left-handed too.....lol

LOL

Yes its tough to believe the 1980's were "the good old days".

I remember the passing of the 1968 GCA,that was when the "good old days" ended imnsho.

Mausers were in 7 or 8 MM and cost 10.00 out of a barrel FILLED with them.

An M-1 carbine was mailed to your door for about 35 to 75 dollars.

Yea,so 1980 = good old days ?.

If your young it was.

The first "red dot" appeared all the way back in the 70's and was very cutting edge well into the 80's (and beyond).
