I have a Remington 1911 R1S and have sent it back once to Remington for feeding issues. Very bad, in my inexperienced opinion, work was done on the feed ramp.

If any of you have one of these guns, can you post a picture of the feed ramp? Or alternatively, look at the picture of mine and tell me how it looks. The picture is after Remington worked on the feed ramp.

It may not be the prettiest-looking job in the world, but it seems (to my eye) to be contoured correctly, and the barrel sits ~1/32" ahead of the top of the ramp, as it should. It doesn't need a mirror polish. How does it shoot?

It jammed the last time I shot it. I have not shot it since it came back from Big Green. Thanks for the info! Ammo is a bit tight right now, will see how it does with 100 rounds this weekend.

Yea, looks OK, as far as that goes. Magazines are a big part of feeding in 1911s.

I had feed problems in my R1S until I did the following:

1. Throw out Remington's garbage springs and replace with Colt
2. Throw out the included magazines and replace with Checkmate with GI feed lips

After that, no problem feeding ball and Federal HST.

Edit to say: If it's functioning correctly, the bullet nose never touches the feed ramp.

The bullet may "glance" off the feed ramp, but it was never designed to ride up the ramp like the casual observer would think.

If the ramp is in the right place, and at the correct angle, and the barrel is properly made, and in the right place in conjunction with the ramp, the gun will feed. A few machine marks won't stop it from doing so if everything is right.

Throw out the included magazines and replace with Checkmate with GI feed lips
Good advise.

The Hybrid feed lips work well too.

If you concern is the tool marks, don't worry...there isn't that much contact beyween the bullet and the ramp anyway.

If your concern is that there is a gap between the ramp and the barrel, don't worry...they aren't supposed to touch.

The finish work is about what I would have expected at that price point. The more important issue is if it feeds

Thanks for the info. I plan on shooting it this weekend.

The mags I was having the most problem with were the Remington mags, and some ACT mags I that my RIA guns likes. I also tried a friend's Wilson Combat mag and a TrippResearch Cobra mag. I had less problems with the Wilson and Tripp. I bought a couple of the Tripp mags, and still had some problems. I smoothed the ramp a little, then sent the gun back to Remington.

As far as ammo, at the class where it failed a lot, I was using On Target Ammo, FMJ's. They reload them, but have a pretty good reputation. (A friend of mine owns the company.) The other times I had problems I was using cheap Mexican Aguila FMJ, a few Monarch JHP and Tulammo. Ammo, especially 9mm and .45 is very scarce here.

Again, thanks for the info, I like to be somewhat knowledgeable before I complain to a company. If it works, I can live with the ugly machine work.

"I polished the feed ramp a bit" is one of those sentences that makes me wince, like "It's OK, dogs LOVE me, I won't get bit", or "She'll only be mad if she finds out, and SHE WON'T FIND OUT."

Somewhere along the line we got sold on the idea that the 1911 feed ramp needs to be shiny bright. It really needs to be correctly contoured, and the barrel need to sit properly in relation to the ramp, but 1911 feeding is dependent on more issues than just the ramp. The magazine needs good feed lips, needs to sit high enough in the well, needs to have strong enough springs, needs a proper follower.... and the magazine isn't the only piece of the puzzle.

Try some 7-round Checkmate/Colt or Tripp Cobramags with enhanced springs and dimpled followers. They solved all my feeding troubles without touching any of the OEM parts in my RIA 1911.

AJumbo, the 'polishing' I did was very minimal, for that reason. I am talking about using 1500 grit sandpaper and my finger to do it. Perhaps I should have sent it off to Remington first, who know.

Oh, here is a picture of the gun as it left the Remington factory originally. I am not saying it should be perfect, but that, in my opinion, is a pretty rough feed ramp, and that is where the gun was jamming, using 4 different brands of magazines.

I will admit, I like a shinny feed ramp. Most of mine get that way after shooting them a lot. :D Again, appreciate the replied! I have some Tripp Cobra mags, will have to look into the enhanced spring and dimpled followers, not sure what kind mine are.

You would think that the stock Remington mags would be the best. Well, there I go thinking again. :)

Sorry, I think that picture is after my 'polishing'. I see some wear on the top of the ramp, most likely caused by me. That is why I stopped 'working' on it, and contacted Remington. Gunsmith, I am not.

I can't say anything about the feed ramp other than mine is a little rough, about how your first picture looks. Mine has worked best with the original mags. I only carry it with them as the CMC Power Mags I picked up have given me quite a few problems. Granted I only used them once so far and didn't shoot a lot through them but it has been nearly 100% before that. I had more failures to feed with the Power Mags in less than 100 rounds as I had in nearly 500 through the originals.

OK, shot it today. 80 or so rounds of cheap Aguila FMJ's, it had not problems. :)

Had a hitch or two with some Monarch JHP's, but that is cheap ammo, and the 1911 was made to shoot FMJ's. So, I guess they fixed it. Chances of me buying a Remington gun new is very low. But, they had an insane turnaround time on this guns repair.

Hopefully I can attend a class in a few weeks, that should give it a good test.

If it matters, Fred, I've not had feed problems with Federal 230gr Hydra-Shok or HST.

Tom
Good to know. When ammo becomes available again, I will find a JHP that works in the gun. My RIA does great with Rem Golden Saber. The JHP's I shot yesterday were cheap Monarch I bought by mistake, thought they were JHP.

Ideally I would have tested the gun with several types and brands of ammo. But, times is tough ammo wise.
