I bought a brand K ProCarry a few years ago, and had problems with the feed ramp. 'Course K told me it was my fault - that the hp's I shot ate up the ramp. Clearly the correction of the feed ramp angle they did before I shot hp's had nothing to do with it. The gun never ran right, and about a year after the dealer took it back from me he was able to get the boys and girls at K to take it back.

Bad experience from K in general, but I relate this because I have a general fear of owning an aluminum frame 1911.

Does anyone make a 1911 that employs a ramped barrel? Or was my experience totally anomalous?

The reason I ask...I just bought a really, really sweet shooting FN P9 for carry, my intent being to carry it when I want something lighter than my Springfield Loaded when walking on the beach or paddling the canoe, and I really like the 1911 platform both for shooting and for the size of the projectile.

Your expertise and opinions are appreciated!

Most Para-Ordnance pistols have barrels that at least mostly incorporate the feed ramp in the barrel. (This for information only; I've had poor luck with this brand.) There are also people who can machine your frame and install a steel insert.

Kimber's had many issues with incorrect barrel ramps, I've had two that needed reshaping.

I think what you question should be is who makes aluminum framed 1911s without ramped barrels and select one of them.

STI makes aluminum framed 1911s with ramped barrels, such as my Shadow. I carry the Shadow daily and it's a great pistol.

Here it is field stripped after 2,000 rounds. No unusual wear and no worries about feed ramp wear since it has a ramped barrel. My Super Carry Pro on the other hand does have ramp wear and is back at kimber right now for that and feeding issues.

So Kimber makes guns with ramped barrels? Not that I would ever consider buying one after my experience (more with Customer service than the gun itself), but the issue I had was the feed ramp on the frame being at the improper angle (this per Kimber).

Some of them do, I may be misremembering as my Pro was a .40 that had a ramped barrel and for some reason I was thinking that yours did as well.

As far as the ramped barrels vs non ramped barrels, there are mixed results, Springfield (as noted above) appears to do it well, Para does OK, I never had problems with mine but others have not been so lucky.

The 4" guns will be either or pending on maker, most of the 4" barrels tend to be ramped while the "true" 4.25" barrels will have the feed ramps as part of the frame. The 3" guns tend to all be ramped.

Kimber's had issues with feed ramps on both formats.

Dan Wessons alloy framed guns come with ramped barrels, the Guardian in 45 or 9mm, and the CCO in 45, both are 4.25" bushed barrels. I have a CCO and would recommend it highly.

I had a Kimber CDPII 5" that used the aluminum ramp in the frame to ramp the cartridge into the barrel.

After only a few hundred rounds an assortment of ammo had ripped up the aluminum causing it to malfunction almost 100% of the time.

I ended up having to get a steel feed ramp installed.

I will NEVER buy another aluminum framed gun that doesn't have a ramp built into the barrel... Kimber was a total PUNK about it and i'll never buy another one of there products because of their lies either.

My early Ultra Carry II and my even earlier Ultra CDP (pre-Series II) both had aluminum ramps. I bought each used.

A prior owner (or his agent) had sanded the ramp on the Ultra Carry so the anodizing was gone and the ramp was soft aluminum alloy. It was pretty dinged-up, so I had Chuck Rogers work his magic. http://forums.1911forum.com/showthread.php?t=146569&highlight=ramp+insert I can't say enought about the amazing workmanship, and he is a great guy to deal with as well.
He also Cera-Koted the frame, and I had a trigger job done by a local 1911 guy. A set of Trijicons later, it is a favorite and a keeper (I have way too much into it to ever sell it).

My later Stainless Ultra Carry came with a ramped barrel. Sold it during a financial downturn, and regret it.

My wife bought a new Ultra CDP II about two years ago, and it has a ramped barrel as well. So I am guessing that all the newer Kimbers come with ramped barrels.

The Super Carry Pro is a new model without the ramped barrel. The ramps are typically on the 3" models for Kimber.

Hmmm, similar situation as I had, only Kimber reshaped the ramp, by appearances farming it out to an 8-yr-old with Dad's Dremel tool....

I had my gunsmith mill the frame out to take a ramper barrel on mine. It's an aluminum 38 Super with about 20,000 rounds now.

I don't pay a whole lot of attention to the new stuff coming out these days.
