At a lgs sits a Firearms Co. Alpine. Does anyone really know anything about these rifles? My second question is that it does not state a caliber. It simply says 300 2.6"? The owner said it was in 300 win mag? Is this correct and if so why doesn't just say 300 win mag?
Thx!

So I researched this a bit more. The rifle actually states .300 2.6". The only thing I can find is the european designation on cartridges is bore and case length. A 300 win mag is .300 and has a case length of 2.6 inches. I am just looking for a bit of confirmation on this. Any help would be great considering I now own this rifle.
Thx

Found this--maybe somewhere on this site you can find your verification of caliber. Or a gunsmith with headspace gages and some sample ammo.

A search on "firearms company, ltd" will get a little info on the company. Seems to have been an outfit that sporterized Mausers. The few examples I saw looked good.

Were it a European designation, it would be metric 7.62x67. The old Sharps cases were designated with case length, one of which was 2.6, because they accommodated different powder charges and bullet weights for target and hunting purposes.

The Alpine rifle was made by the Firearms Co Ltd of Bridgewater England on surplus/confiscated Mauser (98) actions and later with FN manufactured Mauser actions (the 308 for example). They were generally made in 243. 270, 308 and 30-06 (or at least those for the US market were). They exported in fits and starts to the US from the early 1960s up through the early to mid 70s. They also made some shotguns.

Why it would be marked .300 2.6 is odd when examples of the 243 and and 270 were clearly marked 243 Win and .270 Win. Nowhere do I find a reference to 300 WinMag but the coincidence of the 2.6" case is really hard to overcome.

Thank you guys for the help. The web really does not have much info on these firearms. I really think this is a really neat looking little rifle.

Looks like a commercial Mauser action.

The sure way to know is take it to a reputable gunsmith and have him do a chamber casting. In fact I wouldn't shoot it until I did.

There is a post about a foremost rifle from a little while back. He has some pics of the rifle. The spot where caliber is shows 7m/m magnum 2.5". Would a go-nogo gauge help me you think? I also went and looked up specs on 7 mag. Bore is 7mm and case length is 2.5".

It is much clearer to me now. With it marked. 300" 2.6" it is almost certainly 300 WinMag. Perhaps at the time of manufacture it was not well known in the UK, so they used this rather unique way to describe it. With the Brits, one never knows. That may be how the Birmingham Proof House required it be designated.

It's a lovely looking rifle and has passed the demanding requirements of the Proof House, so if the price is right (and an unclear chamber designation argues for a lower price!) I would pick it up and make a chamber cast (kits available from Midway USA) . Great find.

Confirmation

Just wanted to follow up and tell everyone thank you for all the help.:) I took to a smith and he confirmed it is a 300 win mag. So if anyone would like to donate a box of ammo for me to shoot pm me! Lol. I am having nightmares about buying a $60 box of decent ammo to shoot.

Can't help with ammo as the 300 WinMag is beyond my recoil threshold and needs. But that was a nice find and, once ammo becomes available again, will likely give you much joy. Well done on a great find.

At least you have a better chance of FINDING ammo than if you'd bought a 22.
