I'm interested in the purchase of a barrel in .25 caliber, to switch out my 22" sporter barrel on my .25-06 Stevens. I prefer a tactical or varmint weight and 24" or 26" in length.

Thank you, Bowhunter57

Joing SavageShooters...there is a vendor over there...NSS that normally has a bunch of pre fit Savage barrels for sale.

There are other vendors on the forum that sell pre fit Savage barrels as well.

Learning how to search the net is your friend.

I bought/used more "Douglas" bbls than any other brand, and i've always been happy with them...

McGowen makes good barrels too and their service is excellent. They sell pre-fit barrels for Savage. I bought a 7mm barrel from them last year for a Weather Warrior and after a few months decided I wanted a lighter contour. I sent it back to McGowen who only charged me $30 to lighten it up.

aubie515 and 1858,
I just joined Savage Shooters' forum and signed up for the free barrel with McGowen.

I may give the folks at McGowen a call, as I'm not sure whether to go with a prefit Savage barrel or another name brand. Plus, I'm sure they'll be able to answer any questions that I may have, while I'm on the phone with them.

Just about all the major manufacturers are going to offer prefit barrels for the most popular action, the Stevens/savage among them. i like pac-nor myself, but it may just be an Oregon bias.

There are many good barrel makers that do a good job on pre-fit barrels. You typically get what you pay for and top tier barrels are the same. Some people swear that their favorite brand is the best, but many records have been set by many different barrel manufacturers.

I would personally be a bit hesitant on E.R. Shaw. Some love them but I haven't seen much from them that makes me feel like its an improvement over stock. I'd rather find a factory take off for a fraction of the cost. Now, if its a chambering you can't get from the factory in the contour/length you want, it's a tougher call. Douglas, Pac-nor, Mcgowen, Shilen, Benxhmark, Lilja, etc, are all top tier manufacturers with prices that show it. The barrel market is pretty competitive. Keeping in the same price range typically results in similar quality levels.

I was just looking at the Pak-Nor website and their price list and it shows pre-fit barrels in standard calibers at $125. :) As long as I can get one in a tactical or varmint weight/taper, that will work out fine. I'll have to give them a call for more detailed information.

Gentlemen, I appreciate all the info!

Just to clarify, I only meant I would skip E.R. shaw unless it was a non-factory offered chambering. Not to knock ER Shaw, I simply feel they aren't a large improvement over stock.

The others, PAC-nor included, are capable of putting out record breaking barrels. I think you may want to double check your pricing. I think their pricing is $125 to machine their blank for a prefit rifle. So $125 + $260-$310 for the blank. Most top end drop in barrels are $300-$450 ready to be headspaced and go shoot.

E.R Shaw is an attractive option when on a budget, and it may shoot accurate enough. You see a top tier barrel not foul up near as quick as a cheap barrel though. They also don't change POI when they heat up. Groups may open, but the center stays centered. If you shoot 5, let it cool and clean it, and E.R. shaw will do great. But so will most factory Savage barrels.
