I would like to hear from those of you that have shot a straight stocked 45-70 vs. a pistol grip stock 45-70.

* Are there differences in felt recoil, between the two stock styles?

I'm considering the purchase of a Marlin 45-70, but I'm deciding between the 1895 Cowboy with the 26" octagon barrel and the Classic model 1895 with the 22" barrel. I would prefer the Cowboy, as I like the longer octagon barrel and the traditional lines of the straight stock. However, if the recoil is greatly increased due to the stock configuration, I would opt for the Classic 1895 with the 22" barrel.

Your experiences are greatly appreciated, Bowhunter57

recoil and stock

I have shot both styles. For me.....there was little difference in felt recoil between the two. I was shooting handloads.

I don't know if there's a difference. But are you planning on shooting a lot of full power loads that it would make a difference? For the few shots you take hunting I'd buy the gun I like. If you want to just shoot it a lot reload it light and still buy the gun you want. The Cowboy may be hevier and that will help with recoil. Good luck

I shoot pretty hot reloads out of my 1895 and the recoil isn't bad (as a comparison my Rem 721 .30-06 kicks harder though I've shot other .30-06 and they felt easier). I suspect with the longer barrel you should have no probs at all: I think you should get the one you like better, which is why I got the GBL.

BTW: I understand that the straight walled carts don't depend as much on length of barrel to generate more fps... Can anyone confirm or deny that???

Thanks,
Greg

I dont mind straight grip stocks, and like carrying them better in general. I dont know if theres much noticable difference in recoil, but if shooting less than thumper loads, the 45-70 isnt bad to shoot anyway. I had a pad put on mine not too long after I got it, but I was a skinny teen age kid. I still appreciate the pad on the Marlin though.

Thank you, for the replies, gentlemen! :)

I will be reloading for this rifle and currently plan to use some jacketed Hornady 300gr. JHP bullets. I won't be loading any heavy bullets or high powered loads. Just something with good accuracy and the K.E. will do the rest.
