I just picked up a Sig P229 and after I got it home I noticed what I think are strange wear marks. Attached are pictures of the wear. Is it something I should be concerned about?

Very nice!

I love the Sig P229, it's one of my all time favorite Sig pistols. You should enjoy it immensely! I wouldn't worry about those wear marks it doesn't look like anything that should effect the function of the gun in any way.

No marks like that on my P229E2 which was also purchased used but LNIB. I don't think they should affect anything related to the functioning of the gun itself but if it concerns you further maybe have a qualified gunsmith check it out.

Looks like actual galling, not just finish wear. Definitely check for burrs on the slide's frame rails.

Thanks for the replies. I've been wanting a Sig and purchased a 239 a while back and was very disappointed. I wanted it to work but it never felt right in my hand so I sold it. It just seemed very top heavy and unbalanced to me. However, this 229 feels really good to me and I look forward to shooting it more. It seems to me to have a very short single action trigger. I'm more accurate with the double action than single, which is weird but I'll need to get used to it. When I rub my finger along the frame rail I can feel the wear I pointed out on my pistol but it shoots fine. I also put more grease on the frame rails but I know what damage that's done can't be undone. I certainly want it to be reliable but I doubt it will ever be more than a serious range gun. It's just a little to big for me to carry concealed during these hot Alabama summers.

All of my machined slide SIGs have a mark like that on their rails. I've always used grease, and since the marks appeared, they have not grown or changed. If it was galling, I'd have scored more marks along the rails than that. Anodizing is a good finish, but it isn't perfect.

Just don't skimp on the grease. Here's a good example on how you should be lubing the frame.

Have the Exact Same Wear on my P229

I have a P229 .40S&W which I purchased used about a year ago. I'd estimate the gun has about 2,000 to 2,500 rounds through it. I just looked at my gun and I have the exact same wear pattern in the exact same place. I've kept the gun well lubricated, but can't vouch for the previous owner.

All in all, I love this gun and it follows me everywhere I go, and I've had absolutely no problems with it, so I'm not worried about the wear.
