Please Help- Sig SP2022 vs Sig P229

I have an opportunity to buy one of these guns within the next few days... the P229 is on sale and so I need to decide quickly.
Okay- first off- I know that these guns are in different leagues. What I am wondering is for range purposes, will the Sig SP2022 shoot just the same as a Sig P229? The trigger seems to be the same, etc. Other than the difference between poly vs P series metal guns, are there several internal differences or differences in how they shoot? I can buy the Sig SP2022 9mm new right now with Night Sights for $499 and the Sig P229 9mm (new) is on sale with Night Sights for $799. For CC purposes, I personally think the P229 has the advantage but for range use? Tell me what you think.... Thanks!

First a disclaimer. I own several P-series SIGs, including a P229, and love them all. However, I have never owned a 2022. What I have to say about the 2022 is based on what I have read and heard.

From those that have shot both the P229 and P2022 many have said that the trigger on the 2022 is actually better. As for accuracy the 2022 is just your typical SIG - super accurate and easy to shoot.

The internals are different between the P229 and P2022. The 2022, I believe, has a trigger assembly module which makes switching between DA/SA and DAO easier, if that is something you want to do. Also, the 2022 breaks down more like a 1911 (I don't know since I don't own one of these either) than a P-model SIG. Also, the de-cocker and slide release controls are different and some say more difficult to operate.

I have read such positive reports on the 2022 that I am actually considering buying one myself. The price is definitely right - cheaper than all of the P-model SIGs I bought used except for my P6.

I did own a 2022 for about half a year; I wouldn't recommend it. I will say that the 2022 I owned was probably a lemon, and I'm basing that on what wgsigs said - that there are many positive reviews on the 2022.

I shot the 229 once (not mine), and it was quite nice, but had considerable recoil. The 229, however, didn't jam on me like my 2022 did. In short, I learned that sometimes it's better to cough up the extra money for a better product if you are able to. Then again, sometimes not. It was a hard lesson for me. I hope this helps with your decision.

I have never fired the 229 but the security complany i work for part time issued the 2022 in 9mm to us for carry. That being said. I have put many rounds through the 2022 and never a problem. Out of the 29 guns we had at the range we had one that had a stoppage but i contribute that to a new shooter and limp wristing. We shot for 12 hours that day and each shooter went through between 800-1200 rounds. The next range day was 500-1000 rounds each shooter and we ahd no failures that day. So roughly 2000 rounds fired, 22 hours, 29 guns, 1 failure to eject.

I would recommed the 2022 but again i have no experience with the 229. But the 2022 is cheaper and i would pick that one first and then save up for a 229.

The P229 is generally slightly smaller (1/3" in length and height) than the SP2022, but is 1/10" wider and a fraction of an ounce heavier. Internally, the SP2022 has a separate Fire Control Unit that houses the parts of the firing mechanism that are in the frame.

I have a Sig P226ST (full-size, all-stainless sibling of the P229) and a SigPro 2009 (earlier model of the SP2022). The SigPro shoots just as accurately and has been just as reliable as the P226ST, which cost more than twice as much. And the SigPro has a better trigger.

I have heard nothing bad about the Sig Pro line. The same for the P229 series. It really is a tossup. I do believe the 229 is smaller than the pro but weighs more.

Thanks for the replies. I was going to buy the Sig Pro for $499 but found a new Sig P229 SCT 9mm for $675! It will be here in a few days and I am SO excited to shoot it.

Think you made the_better choice..

Having 3 P229's, 40's and 9mm with CT laser grips and I can tell you they are accurate, forgiving, get better and better (trigger wise) and are so "simple and easy" to dissemble, inspect, clean, and reassemble, bar none.. and just keep on shooting, shot after shot after shot ..

It will be ~ A Keeper ~
