Anyone ever see one of these at their local shop? I don't go to Academy Sports often, but happened to stop by one last week. I didn't know you could even buy a package of 5.56 like the one below, at least not at a big box retailer. 12,500 rounds of Federal 5.56 62 grain packed in a single small metal drum. Only $6,500 and it could be yours....if you could figure out how to move it.

Never did see such a thing. And you can currently by it for the same price per round delivered...

MattShlock...Good point. I realize the cost per round isn't a bargain, but it didn't occur to me that that you can buy online for that AND have it delivered in boxes that are way more convenient to move and store. I tried to see if I could move the drum when I was in the store and couldn't budge it.

So, is that a 55 gallon drum? There's nothing in the picture to give it perspective.

Regardless, at the rate I shoot that caliber, that drum would last me a really, really long time.

That's only about 110 lbs. My order of 6000 147gr 9mm bullets weighed 126 lbs. and the mail lady smiled carrying the three "if it fits, it ships" boxes to my front door:)

A friend bought a 25 gallon drum of federal 5.56 ammo. He paid hundreds of dollars not thousands of dollars. He said shipping cost almost as much as the ammo. An 18 wheeler backed up in his yard with the ammo. He rolled it off the truck onto a lawnmower trailer.

It's not a 55 gal drum. It's probably like 25 or 30 gal in size. However, I can assure you it weighed more than 110 lbs. A little digging on the interweb shows that a 1000 rounds of 62 gr 5.56 weights just under 30 lbs., so 30 * 12.5 = 375 lbs. Add in the weight of the drum and your right at 400 lbs. In high school, I had a job loading 55 gal drums full of textile chemicals onto trucks. The drums weighed 450 - 550 lbs each. Did it by hand. Got very good at "breaking" them over on their edge and rolling them in to position. This drum was about 1/2 the size of a 55 gal.

30 gal. drum, federal xm855 62 gr., weighs 350 lbs.
store policy is to 'ask' for your personal info (eg. name, address, phone #), which they WILL forward to bat/fe ( as the bat/fe requested them to do (WTH!), through their firearms compliance dept.

Just politely decline to provide that info, pay yo' $$ and go on about your way.

I have heard this isn't bulk ammo but rather milsurp stuff that the government refused for whatever reason. Failed inspection or some other issue.

I misread it, I thought it was just the bullets and not the entire round. The case alone probably weighs more than the bullet.
