I was recently on a gun auction site. I am looking for an upper for my 2nd AR. My first AR is in the 5.56/.223 format. Looking at my options for the 2nd AR since I built the lower. I ran across a listing for a complete upper in 7.62x39. It had everything, including BCG and charging handle. The listing said it was ready to attach to "your standard AR lower receiver".

My question is, how does that work? Anyone using this kind of setup? It comes with one 10 round ASC magazine. Not sure what that means. Do I have to get special magazines?

Your comments are appreciated.

You need special magazines, but it can work with a 5.56 lower. Not well, unfortunately.

The 7.62x39 round is tapered much more than the 5.56, so the magazines need to curve quite a bit (think AK-47 magazines). The design of a standard 5.56 AR receiver forces the cartridge to travel through a straight section that can cause feeding problems for 7.62x39

I have ar-15 I recently set up for dedicated 7.62X39 upper and it works great, shoots 100%. It does need a stock milspec trigger and hammer spring that comes in 90% off the shelf AR-15 rifles. I tried to run mine with a 3lb timney and it would not set off Russian primers, went with a stock M&P 15 lower and it is dead reliable. I used an ARD bolt and barrel with an enhanced 7.62X39 firing pin. Not really sure if the enhanced firing pin aids in anything but i got it just in case. It is pretty hard to find ASC 30 rounders right now but they are on gun broker for about $35 or so. I have ASC 10 rounders and 30 and they work perfect. ASC is the defacto in 7.62X39 mags. You can get 5.56 mags to work with a 7.62X39 follower but they hang up if you try and load more than 8-10 rounds. If you are a fan of the AR platform and want to run cheap Russian steel cased I would highly recommend getting the upper. Through the craziness 7.62X39 steel cased was available and still cheap so it is a good strategy. Maybe the russian bi-metal will wear the bore out after 6000 rounds but a new barrel is under $200. BUY IT!!!!!

Colt upper/RRA lower

ASC mags work fine, I just wish they made a 20-rounder. I emailed them last summer and they replied one should be available by fall. Didn't happen...

My 7.62x39 AR is one of my favorites. Quite capable of MOA accuracy.

It is a good option if you want to shoot cheap steel AK ammo in an AR.

If its in your price range, go for it.

In regards to magazines for these, every place seems to have been out of them for months.

This morning i received (almost) all the parts to finish my upper in 7.62x39 an hour
Later I was sitting at the bench breaking it in. Early reports are good about a 3 inch group at about 85 yards with Herters steel cased fmj, the only issues are, the tulla I had on hand needed two strikes to it ignite and it did not want to pick up the next round (not a big deal I haven't received my 7.62 mags yet I was using my 6.8 mag after tweaking the feed lips image.jpg
