No 454 Casull

Guys,

Keep in mind just because one cartridge has more 'performance' than the other does not mean the cartridge/platform is worth a dang.

Full house .454s or .460s or 20mm Oerlikon in a handgun is manageable by only a few people (in the 20mm case I doubt anyone can.) Most people would say to heck with them.

For myself, I have found if I can't do it with a .44 magnum then I need a good rifle.

Some stout people may love shooting the true hand cannons but I don't.

And notice John Taffin, the great hand cannon shooter and hunter, had to have his wrist fused so it won't move due to destroying it by shooting all has JDH handcannons.

I don't want that happening to me.

The local sheriffs dept wanted to buy a case of Fiocchi 125 gr 357 ammo. Fiocchi states that the ammo is supposed to make 1700 fps. Out of a 4" barrel they were getting varied results some as low as 1200 fps. I have a Dan Wesson with a 10" barrel that was in my tool box. Out of the Dan Wesson the fiocchi ammo was chronographed at 1600 fps. Close to the advertised velocity. Since fiocchi likely used a test barrel one would need a carbine to get the advertised velocity out of the ammo. In a later test fiocchi ammo clocked around 1600 fps out of my ruger blackhawk with a 6.5" barrel.

I don't know how much difference barrel length would make with a 460. But I would bet it's greater than a 357 mag. The range at the sheriffs dept is near the river. We can only guess by looking at topographical maps is around 50' above sea level.

This is true Deaf. I have no problem handling a 460, but I am 6'3" tall with a large frame. My hands are proportional, so it works for me. A 5" 460 may not work for everyone. I know the 8" bbl would be useless to me though, as I could not draw it and aim fast enough in a angry critter encounter, and that is mainly why I bought it. I love to hike!!! I would love to shoot a longer bbl version to see how the recoil compares.

I managed to slap a target with all 5 rounds in about 5 seconds at 15 yards the last time I practiced. They were not tremendously great shots though, and I did have a headache after doing so from the concussion. They were those 325 gr. HSM "Bear Loads", and seemed loaded pretty stoutly. I need to practice more, but it is expensive to do so. I carry mine in a Desantes hip holster, and sport suspenders to hold the pants up when I carry mine.

I assume the OP is a larger gent also, or he probably wouldn't be interested in an X-frame. If S&W had made an N frame, 6 shot .454 when I was shopping, I may have gone that way. You know though, I do love a nice .44 magnum. A 7.5" SRH was the first gun I ever shot.

I am considering buying an X frame. I borrowed my friends X frame with an 8.5 barrel. I really liked the gun. I kept it for two weeks. By the time I took it back I was hitting a golf ball every third shot at ranges from 7 to 25 yards. I have a place where I cleared brush. There are zillions of perfect stumps to sit golf balls on. I buy the big bags of cheapo golf balls at walmart for $10.

I am a big guy as well. I am 6'4" 250 lb. The first time I shot a 460 I damn near jumped out of my skin.

Friends of mine think my .44 magnum is a huge gun and unnecessary.

Just depends on the individual and what they can handle.

But say, have you tried a 20mm Oerlikon? 1700 grain slug at 2700 fps (but you need a 87 inch barrel.)

I usually lean to the Ruger or S&W for the 6 round capacity. Not that I need that extra cannon round, but, for frame strength. I feel better with that in my hand. I do not like the Taurus either. I do not want to hurt anyone's feelings but that is my opinion.

Kodiak have you tried the 460 ammo from Georgia Arms? It's not as stout as double tap but it goes bang. I shot 200 rounds of it without a hitch. They only sell FMJ but that is all you need for target practice. It's $73 for 100 rounds.

One of the reasons I want a X frame is it will force me into reloading. Everything else I own I can afford factory ammo. Plus the savings amount to $2.50 an hour. Moreover, you are stuck shooting cast, FMJ or hollow points. I prefer to shoot JSP in my magnum handguns. Once I get into reloading I will find a source of more exotic pills. I will have too.

I didn't choose a 460 Magnum, I defaulted to one because what I wanted wasn't available. I didn't ask anyone about barrel lengths either. Argue somewhere else will ya?

I am truly sorry your thread got trashed. I am just flat out tired of some idiot saying a pistol with a 4" barrel or in this case a 5" barrel will perform like pistol with an adequate barrel. Every expert and chronograph in the world says they are full of bull crap.

I am just trying to help you avoid an expensive train wreck. Yet the parrots are more than willing to lead you into one. Like the guy that is over 6' tall and can't draw an 8" barrel. He must be frickin handicapped. This is supposed to be a place of good advice, not silly nonsense.

I don't believe these idiots have ever shot a frikin magnum revolver. They are just parrots, repeating what someone they want to believe said.

Good grief, Mr. Freak. You sure are entitled to your opinions and preferences, but sometimes it is good to stop and consider that the other guy's opinion may be based on just as many facts and as much (or more) experience as yours. In other words, he may be right, TOO. In fact, your scope of rightness may be quite a bit more limited than his!

Saying there are no benefits to magnum calibers in shorter barrel lengths appears to indicate that your scope of understanding is quite limited. Millions of shorter barreled magnums out there seem to prove there's (to put it mildly) something you're missing.
