CT, it's expensive here
I've been considering finally getting my pistol permit so I can own one of these babys.
Specifically the Ruger .454 Casull Super Redhawk.
Anyone have experience with one?

I have a 480 SRH (9.5") and I can honestly say that it kicks pretty hard, but it is manageable. More than a 44 mag? Yes.... I can shoot maybe 20 rounds before I start flinching badly. Your 454 with factory loads will have a more substantial recoil. The biggest thing that I noticed was when I first started shooting it, I had a tendancy to grip it a little high. Thre result was a bloody web between my thumb and index finger due to the hammer during recoil. If you pay attention to your grip and keep it relatively low, you will not have my experience. Hope you enjoy it. I shot a buck this year at 50 yds with my 480 and was pretty proud of that accomplishment. My first handgun buck.

Well...

I am sure you've heard this advice applied to other things, but...

Do the right thing and buy a proper ring/scope set up (if you're going to scope it, that is)

The ruger factory rings just dont hold up, at least in the 2 examples I have seen.
And neither does a scope not specifically made for hard-recoiling handguns.
I wouldn't doubt that part of the reason for the failure of other systems is the Cor Bon 360gr Penetrators at 1500fps the guy was touching off! But really, why else buy a 454 Casull if not to put the Uber ammo through it?

But the weigand 454 mount, weigand 3-ring magnum ring set; and either a nice Burris or Leupold handcannon-worthy scope seem to hold up well.

Again, i have only seen a couple examples. maybe others will have more to say.

Recoil with 454 loads is unpleasant (at least to me and I have and shoot a 500 S&W). However you can also shoot 45 Colt ammo through it and this is a very pleasant combination. Do yourself a favor if you buy one and get a set of Hogue rubber grips before you shoot it with 454 ammo. Try a round with the factory grips, then one with the Hogue grips and you appreciate the difference. Good luck in any case.

As you can see, I like long tubes!!

I chose to equip this (same as on similar 44 mag SRH) with a Millet red dot - and that does me well. I have a scope on Raging Bull in .454 but EER scopes drive me nuts keeping a sight picture.

This gun with full house Hornady 240 or 300 grainers is great. Somewhat ''energetic'' in recoil department but - the grin still gets thru! :). Now I have accumulated a good bit of brass - reloading is about to commence.

It is funny how different people rate recoil differently. My 7.5 SRH 454 seems milder in recoil than the .480 Ruger I shot last year. Maybe more energy, but it didn't seem to smack the hand as hard but that might just have been a 'hand is sore' day or something when I shot it.

Also, I have tried the Houge grip on my 454 and, while it IS nice with .45 Colts I quickly took it off for the heavy shooting. FAR too narrow and the web of the hand really took a beating.

The only time the 454 seems really abusive is when trying to shoot quickly double action. I have on film somewhere 6 shots under 2 seconds and actually hitting a car tire/wheel from about 10 yards. My trigger finger was kind of sore afterwards and some skin displaced. Must have been starting to pull the next shot while still in recoil. Ouch.....

I love my 7.5" model. Pretty stout recoil with the full-house loads, but fun.

yeah

And just in case you get confused like I know some folks were: the grips for the GP 100 fit the Super Redhawk, too.

I've shot big bore handguns for over 30 years. I own several 1911's and 44 mags. A 454 goes to a whole new level. I have a 6 " Raging Bull. 3 shots is all I really enjoy shooting then it becomes work. I'm a pussy I guess.

The only "handgun" I had real trouble shooting was a friends 45/70. Fired it once and my hand really hurt - figured I must have been holding it wrong, so like an idiot I tried it again. Same result with more pain. I'd been banging away with .454's for about 7 years when I tried that 45/70 - I won't do it again.

If you do a search on this board you'll find a lot of info on the RSRH in .454. I got one and love it. If you wanna shoot with the big boys I don't think you can go wrong with the SRH, if you must have the absolute nicest 454 then dough out three times the money for a Freedom Arms .454, some people like the Taurus Raging Bulls and I know P95 likes his but I've heard issues of them staying together after many rounds. The new S&W 460 will shoot 45colt, 454 and that 460 round, still think that a handloader could get the 454 to equal the 460 ballistically anyways, since the 460 is only shooting a 200gr bullet. I'd look for a used one, you can get a barely shot SRH for around $400 and most of these probably don't have a full box of ammo through them, A lot of 454 newbies decide to stick to their little .357mags and 44 mags after a couple of Casull rounds!:p
