Need suggestions for non-1911 .45 ACP

I like my fathers P220 Carry, but you already stated you don't like P220s...

So my only other suggestion is the HK45, while I haven't shot one the grip is pretty nice.

I'm primarily a 1911 shooter. I have a 4506. It is a big gun. The grip and trigger reach are not that much bigger than the 1911, but it just seems a lot bigger, mostly because it is taller.

The Ruger P345 has the most 1911ish grip of any poly gun I've handled, though they are out of production now. I haven't handled the SR45.

There's the discontinued Ruger P90 as well. Metal frame, single stack DA/SA. Never tried one myself but they seemed popular.

A gun often overlooked is the Taurus PT145. They are moving to a new generation, so they may be harder to find, but worth it. It's a gem, I've known 2 other people with them and we all love it. 10 rounds, one in the chamber.

Lightweight, easy to carry and conceal, it's a real nice gun. Warranty is for life.

The M&P trigger can easily and cheaply be improved.

The HK trigger can be improved for $300 or so but it's still an HK....

The Glock 21-SF is enough different to matter, so check it out along with the Gen 4.

The XD/XDM is a good feeling hicap .45, holding 3rds more than the comfortable SR-45, if that matters.

I was in the same boat...I wanted a modern auto in .45 ACP. I narrowed down my choices to a Sig 227, An HK 45 or FNH FNX45. I went with the FNX because of the ergonomics (It's completely ambidextrous for easier weak hand shooting and the thinner backstrap gives the pistol a decided BHP/CZ75 feel.) and it's mag capacity. Speaking of mags, the FNX comes with three 15 round mags, versus the typical two. The FNX was also the least expensive of the three.

I like the Beretta Cougar 8045. Sweet gun. All metal. A little large and heavy but it's a character.

Sig P250. The grips come in three sizes (S-M-L) and three configurations (sub-compact, compact, and full size).

I would suggest at least renting and shooting the FNX-45, I fired one and it was the second most accurate handgun I've ever fired. I shoot my Glock 21 the most accurately.

+1 to a Sig P220. I've had one for years, and like my 1911's, will never give it up.

I have a Ruger SR45 and it feels good in my medium size hands. Been trouble free through the first 1500 rounds. Recoil definitely manageable Nice gun for the price I paid ($395). Definitely will not replace my Springer 1911 though.

Concerning the HK45C. I strongly suggest the light LEM trigger.

For the money, check out Glock. There have been many good suggestions and you need to handle as many as you can to see what you like best.

Sweetest handgun I've ever fired was a Sig P220. If I ever graduate college I may buy one.

With the small grip insert, my wife's smaller hands will comfortably handle the M&P45.

I also have the Taurus PT145 with SA/DA trigger and it probably has the smallest double-stack 45 grip with very short reach to trigger in SA mode.

If you want a comfortable shooting range gun, I would suggest the fullsize M&P45 but with a trigger job or the APEX sear replacement which absolutely improves the trigger feel and accuracy.

Typically, when I buy a gun in a caliber I already have, it has to do something the current gun(s) can't do. Function overlap is fine, but function redundancy is not.

For example, my first 1911 was a Colt Govt. My second, a Colt Lightweight Commander. Lotta function overlap, but shorter and lighter.

Since the OP doesn't want a compact, that leaves full size. A single stack 220/P-90/645/4506 really fills no additional niche for the OP.

But a double stack Para/M&P/XD/XDM/250/Glock/FNH adds a missing element in the OP's current collection.

Springfield XDm compact. And I'm an MP fan...in 40 and 9.

Another vote for the Sig P220...I have two & they are both dead reliable and as accurate as any service pistol I've ever tried. Love 'em.

It's tough when you're a .45 acp fan. If you like the .45acp, a single stack 1911 really doesn't have much competition. It is when you move away from the .45 acp that other pistols start to shine, but that doesn't seem to be an option. If I were to buy a 45 right now it would be an M&P, either size. If you go the M&P route, make sure to take the slide off at the store and make sure it has the new barrel. Also you won't be happy after a single action w/o adding some APEX stuff and probably some quality sights, but at least the ones that come on the m&p aren't plastic.

There was worthy competition. Old S&W 745 was pretty good pistol. The DA/SA Gen 3 were also excellent pistols. Had two and they did not jam. I would rather have one of these then the SIG 220.

My favorite are either a Sig P220 or Hk USP.

Nobody else has said it so I will. Ruger KP97. DA/SA decocker single stack poly frame. A lot more comfortable to shoot than a 1911.

Sig 220 with short reset trigger is as accurate as any high end 1911, feels great, and is one of my favorite pistols. That said, it chokes on my semi wad cutter reloads.

HK45 trigger is not fantastic, but LEM isn't terrible. Prefer 1911 and P220 trigger over either V1 or LEM. Not as accurate as my 1911 or Sig. Higher mag capacity than P220 or 1911. Mag release is awkward. Eats any ammo, in spec or not.

G30SF has a fantastic trigger after 3.5lb trigger bar upgrade. Accuracy is great for a compact pistol...with the right loads. Mag capacity of 10...or more with extended G21 mags. Aftermarket support rocks.

A pistol that always follows me to the range is my SW 625 JM. Best trigger in SA. Eats anything, and I mean ANYTHING...too long, too short, too hot, too weak...can't be jammed. Nice accuracy.

XDM least favorite. Trigger heavy, reset less crisp than others. Recoil seemed more harsh than the other autos. Accuracy was...meh. Good mag capacity. Traded it off after 200 rounds due to mediocre experience with it. Love my "XDS" but it's 9mm...
