Immediately following Obama's SOTU speech, a group of antigun House Democrats introduced a resolution (which, btw, won't go anywhere) which reads in pertinent part:

Expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that gun violence is a public health issue and Congress should enact by the end of the 113th Congress comprehensive Federal legislation that protects the Second Amendment and keeps communities safe and healthy, including expanding enforceable background checks for all commercial gun sales, improving the mental health system in the United States, and making gun trafficking and straw purchasing a Federal crime.

Notice what this agenda doesn't include. What's left? Commercial sales (that is, sales by FFL holders) are already subject to background checks. Who is against "improving the mental health system"? And gun trafficking and straw purchasing are already federal crimes. These congresspeople, at this point, are just throwing meaningless bones to their antigun constituents. Everybody knows that gun control is dead this year.

I would be careful. One of the failed Bills in my home state to get universal background checks did it by classifying any person selling a firearm as a commercial seller. Therefore you would need your own FFL or go through a dealer. Luckily the bill failed.

So what if they have thrown in the towel this is not two boxers in the ring with a declared winner. This is a turf war with gangs. Just because they punked out and are backing off doesn't mean we have to punk out as well and let them run off.

We need to take the initiative and keep pressing our constitutional rights because they'll be coming back eventually. It might take a while but they'll be back, especially if they make any gains in the House and don't take any significant loses in the Senate.

This to me is just maneuvering to appease their slightly pro-gun base in a hope of getting their votes instead of risking the loss of them to Pro-gun Republicans. That's all this looks like to me.

It's like watching a wife beater hugging his wife and stroking her hair and apologizing to her for the black eye promising he'll never do it again but what she doesn't see that someone else would see, is that he is smiling while he does all that because he knows he'll go and do it again at some point and all he will have to do is say the same bull to get her back promising he'll never do it again.

Any pro-RKBA that votes for these sorts in the upcoming election is a fool, plain and simple.

Just like cockroaches they're just waiting for the lights to go out again. In other words when no one is paying attention.

And as I pointed out in another post here on THR that DiFi was working on her anti-gun (putting a whole class of rifles under the NFA) legislation for a year. Before Aurora and Sandy.

And Gabby planned to have an anti-gun ad before and after the State Of The Union Speech.

There is a proposal in New Hampshire for UBC with a penalty of 7 years in the slammer.

No, they're waiting for one more crazy low-life to shoot up a mall or school.
It WILL happen and we WILL be doing this all over again.

Threw in the towel? On an issue this big?

Sounds like a feint to me. You never attack where and when the enemy is strongest, you go for the weak points and force him to fight your fight, not his own.

It's our American ideal to face down the enemy, to square off and have a showdown.

In reality, guerrilla tactics work well against the stronger enemy. Slow back, ease down, give the appearance of concession and you'll give him overconfidence. He'll go from alert to comfortable to slovenly. Then re-attack from an unexpected angle with a new weapon and as he rushes to get ready for the fight, you've already dealt a major blow.

Wash, Rinse, Repeat until you've beaten him, if you have to, by a thousand cuts.

"expanding enforceable background checks for all commercial gun sales"

Background checks for all commercial gunsales, ie licensed dealer sales thru FFLs, have been in effect since Nov 1998 when the NICS went on-line.

"improving the mental health system in the United States"

Fine, let's start with Congress and the Executive.

"making gun trafficking and straw purchasing a Federal crime"

dealing in firearms without a license has been a federal crime since the 1968 gun control act.

falsifying a federal record as to the identity of the actual buyer & recepient of gun aka straw purchasing has been a federal crime since the 1968 GCA required buyers to fill out a 4473.

What are they going to do? Rename the offenses of dealing without a license or falsifying a federal record? Or, more likely, hide in the bills surprises we wouldn't be allowed to read until after it was passed.

Gabby and her husband Mark were in my state (WA) capital, yesterday, testifying for I-594, an initiative to require all private gun sales to be subject to background checks through an FFL dealer. I guess getting shot in the head by a nut who passed background checks makes her an expert on gun control. And, the anti- gunners are already crowing about their next move after the passage of this initiative. So, the anti gunners might be quitted for a while in DC, but here in Washington State things are heating up

We're already seen attempts to move the anti movement from the national to the state level. Colorado and NY State as recent examples spring to mind. What they can't get in one place, they'll try elsewhere. States with pre-emption laws can at least avoid a city-by-city fight. As already mentioned, attack where your opponent is weaker and in many different locations.

Never EVER think these people are down and out. They have more lives than a cat and determination to destroy the second amendment by ANY and ALL means. They will NEVER go away, and never stop trying to take away your gun rights.

They will never quit. Until their constituents literally throw them out of office for introducing anti gun bills, they'll keep trying. Liberals are too stupid to come up with a genuinely useful law, so they'll just keep hammering on this one. It's just a lack of originality, that's all.

In one of my old history books from college, I remember reading about the ancient Greeks, and how that when a lawmaker proposed a new law, he did so with a noose around his neck. If his constituents disliked the law, they kicked out the chair he was standing on.

If that's not true, it should be.

This does show the power of the public. Our elected officials do know where the voters stand on this issue, but if we relax and become silent, they will rapidly forget. The pressure and the power of the vote and voices can never let up.

Don't bring up Zamudio, after all he "almost shot the wrong man"

yeah, almost, except he didn't

Gun trafficing and straw purchases are already a federal crime, unless you are a friend of the current attorney general.......chris3

I see the politicians trying to soothe the pro-gun crowd because the mid-term elections are upon in this year. They wish to lull us into a false sense of security so they can keep their seats and maybe pick up the few they need to push it over the top. They are dumb like foxes. Don't let them fool you.

As usual we won't likely see much anti-gun legislation during an election year. Sneaky scum will wait until right AFTER November election.

Dave P. beat me to it. They are waiting for the next massacre, in order to capitalize on the blood and misery.

They would have much more political capital, and can take advantage of it much more than simply having
a Female;) queen elected to the White House.
