Documents from an Ohio National Guard (ONG) training drill conducted last January reveal the details of a mock disaster where Second Amendment supporters with “anti-government” opinions were portrayed as domestic terrorists.

The ONG 52nd Civil Support Team training scenario involved a plot from local school district employees to use biological weapons in order to advance their beliefs about “protecting Gun Rights and Second Amendment rights.”

Portsmouth Chief of Police Bill Raisin told NBC 3 WSAZ-TV in Huntington, West Virginia that the drill accurately represented “the reality of the world we live in,” adding that such training “helps us all be prepared.”

This is where I lived for the past 25 years. I lived just across the river most of my life beyond that 25 year period. It's nice to know they're scared of us I guess. But anyone using mustard gas on kids is a monster. I've never heard anyone suggest such a foul and loathsome thing. But apparently they figure that's what people who support the 2nd are really like. What a country. Yeah we're going to poison kids because a black president was elected. This has Obama's stamp all over it.

Anyone who thinks there are no reasons to own firearms should read this. Who's next on the list of "potential terrorists" to be attacked by government forces? That's why we have the 2nd amendment and it certainly isn't the supporters of the constitution and limited government who are driving a potential confrontation. I've never heard anyone suggest such heinous actions be taking as gassing young children. Do they hate us that much?

We are at war with Oceania. We have always been at war with Oceania.

I like how they always make about 2A supporters or gun rights! FAIL

Obongo and his band of failing fools still puttin' on the hate!

Don't see this one being open for much longer...
hopefully it stays open, this is a topic that deserves some attention.

Well said.

This isn't the first, there was another national guard training against 'right wing extremists' or something like that a year or 3 ago.

Not surprised. The National Guard trains for contingency emergencies. Mostly training for situations caused by natural disasters but every now and then we do train in crowd control and martial law. The National Guard is the only military force that can be deployed stateside, with the approval from the Governor, in times of emergency. For every story like this saying the NG trains against "extremists" there aren't articles saying we are training how to extract people out of stranded vehicles.

I also hope it stays open.

This is a forum about gun rights. While SHTF scenario threads are taboo, when the government actually starts TRAINING their troops to fight a "2nd amendment / right wing insurgency", well, that's *directly* related to the right to keep and bear arms in this country.

*ANY* political movement has extremists; ours is no different in this regards. Heck, in that article they're citing ACTUAL attacks made by liberal tree-huggers / animal right's activists.

But they're running the exercises in a non-generic fashion - not "these people have a bomb in a school", but rather, "these pro-2nd amendment gun owners have a bomb in a school."

Which steps WAY the hell over the line, in my opinion.

Actually the ONG had a similar training exercise involving left wing terrorists (which actually exist in the form of ALF, ELF, etc.). That took place in Athens, Ohio not more than 90 minutes from Portsmouth. They had to apologize the next day for portraying US citizens as potential terrorists the next day. This story originally broke in Jan. on WSAZ and no apology is coming. I wrote the governor asking about one today. He's a Republican BTW. The original story is here:

Portsmouth is a hot bed of pro gun politics. I'm not surprised they picked it as the location for a demonstration of the potential threat of the NG. I've said it many times. People from that area are about as pro gun as it gets. I lived just across the river from Portsmouth for about 15 years. I lived just up the river from there for another 25 years. Those are my friends and family they are directly threatening. It's sick. Maybe those who doubted my reports of BATF agents in the area might re-think their positions now. The feds know what we think and they do not like us. It's blatant intimidation IMO.

BTW the previous episode where right wing extremists were portrayed as potential terrorists by the NG was in the areas of the country where the milita movement has been very strong and there has been actual terrorism by members of those groups (Oklahoma City for example). But their primary focus was the events of Waco and Ruby Ridge. There have been no acts of terrorism by 2nd supporters that I've heard of. It's just Obama's way of trying to intimidate people IMO. It won't work. Those people will only dig in their heels over this. Maybe he's pushing them to act. I don't know. That's politics and probably has no place here. But this is a serious threat to our culture and civilization IMO. Portsmouth is the home of several world class shooters and a very strong gun culture. The flea markets and "trade days" events in the area all have lots of guns for sale without background checks. Maybe the NSA has figured out that people in the area are extremely pro gun. There's a reason for that too BTW. As I've said before the area around the city is very rural with much of it being part of a national forest. Wildlife is abundant there in potentially dangerous forms (bear, coyotes, mountain lions, bobcats and feral dogs) and there are drug gangs, meth cooks, and pot farmers all over the area. Breaking into houses is a staple of the economy. People are not going to want to give up their protection against such things.

there aren't articles saying we are training how to extract people out of stranded vehicles.

You're right. I don't think anyone blames the guard for this. It's some politician calling the shots. That's who ultimately runs things for the NG. We all appreciate the great things the guard does. I sure as heck do. I'm guessing most of them hate this training as much as I do though. There's just no reason for them to think it's going to happen. I can understand training for the militia movement types who have already proven they can be extremely violent but even those groups are painted with the same brush when they shouldn't be. McViegh and friends were nut cases who believe all sorts of idiotic stuff. We support the constitution - big difference.

Ah yes, a highly fictionalized play with the most unlikely of actors. Any moderatley educated person who supports the second amendment knows that doing something like this would only hinder, not just theirs, but everyones rights.

I have a question for which I hope to get objective replies. In training for response to terrorist attacks is there not value in knowing the motivation of the attackers in responding to said attacks? I mean is there a tactical or strategic reason to assign fictional motivations for the response drills?

Well never fear...

Once the cartels move up higher in the U.S Ohio will then find out what real terrorism is.

And they can thank the U.S. government for letting them in to get votes.

Did anyone else take the time to actually read through all the documents provided by "Mediatrackers?" One printed article from CNN.com news website "Why the NRA won't talk to Obama" being the only "link" to 2nd Amendment supporters for this scenario of a school employee poisoning children ... A bunch of other fairly innocuous, official-looking "documents" including an incomplete ICS log.

Much ado about very little, really. For those of you who've never been government employees, getting your panties all twisted over poorly thought-out scenarios for emergency drills, usually dreamed up by an agency's low level minions ... well, makes for great internet drama, but likening this excrement to our Founding Fathers' rebellion is a tad silly.

The only thing I could think of is if there is a negotiation phase involved, with role-playing. Key players would need a back story to make it realistic.

But if it was simply a "respond, contain, control, and eliminate" drill, I don't see why it would be required.

Little orphan Annie could be cooking up Ricin in her ez-bake set and it'd work just as well for a motive. The important part to learn in field training is how to function as part of the team that has to contain and control the biological threat.

Ever since the "militarization" of police started it's fed the conspiracy theorists appetites like bacon feeds mine. (nomnomnom..)

I mean, on one hand, I can understand the militarization - on the other, it makes me a bit wary of where we're headed as a civilization.

Yesterday, the "tinfoil hat" guys were worried about the government using drones to monitor citizens.

Today, they actually DO.

Yesterday, the "network admins" and black-hats were worried about the Government using beam splitters and breaking root certs on the CA's to monitor normal civilians internet traffic (even encrypted traffic)...

Today.. they actually DO.

So yeah, I'm starting to grow a little damn concerned about the 2 milsurp'd MRAP armored personnel carriers the local farm town picked up on a government grant, painted up black, and drive around town now with their shiny black boots and pretty black outfits on.

The downward spiral starting here is not reassuring.

It's an excellent question. It's the fact that these United States have radically changed their policies so much that the American citizens are now the preceived threat to the country. History has shown us that when a country's citizens are targeted as the threat, bad things happen to them.

Trent touches on a very valid point in post #18 that the militarization of the police force can and will have drastic consequences. When people concerned about their Rights become 'potential threats' people DO need to be concerned about their Rights.

Are we surprised?

I'm going to give you two stereotypes: Right wing gun-rights supporter or left-wing gun confiscation supporter.

Very few are so black and white, but those are the stereotypes given.

Now tell me, which of those two groups spouts things like "Molon labe" and "You can take it from my cold dead hand" or tell people they'll give up their guns "one bullet at a time"?

Our very vocal minority, in my opinion, contributes greatly to this stereotype against us. Yes, most of us believe in armed resistance and even revolution, but these outrageous scenarios are focused on the very vocal minority who do (sadly) espouse such scenarios

Dakota. I think the point is, after 237 years of Liberty, if people have a problem with those vocal people that want to protect their Rights, the problem is in the system, NOT the people advocating their Constitutionally guaranteed Rights. Molon Labe and Pry them from my cold dead hands, shouldn't have even been coined if it weren't for an ever growing threat to the preservation of Freedom.

Yes to desensitize (and condition) the troops in a situation where they might otherwise have second thoughts.

You're talking about the NRA's position on the issues when you talk about "my cold dead hands". I don't think that's such a small minority. The people I know who don't support staunch defense of our rights are generally afraid to take that stand.

I hate the idea of an armed revolt. No one wins in war. But you can certainly lose big time. If they take away our method to resist we become sheep for the slaughter unfortunately. History has shown us clearly that those that surrender their means of defense end up wishing they hadn't done it. Sometimes it becomes incredibly bad. I'm not saying that will happen in the US because I think those that speak up are doing a pretty good job of keeping our rights in most places and even expanding them in many areas. Yes some states have pushed much further than the constitutional guarantees. But our political system is dealing with those who pushed those laws at least in some states.

The political battle is far from over and I'm not about to be intimidated by a political move like the one in Portsmouth. My guess is a great number of those NG troops would be on our side if push came to shove. Even the Russians refused to fire on their own people when the Soviet Union fell. I know there are isolated examples of the NG firing on citizens but they were pretty much the work of panic and under trained troops. No one gave an order to fire at Kent St. Some idiot just lost his head and some others lost their lives. Both sides were pushing very hard at that time. That time was much worse than now when it came to division. You had lots of people openly calling for revolution. I don't see much of that now. They were burning down buildings on college property all over the country. That is an act of war and the radical left was doing it. And some paid with their lives over it. When it happened it sickened people on both sides so much that relations got much less contentious. We saw flowers being stuck in the end of gun barrels at the Pentagon demonstration after that. Both sides had backed down.

I'd get in to what I think our greatest problems of division are but this is the wrong board for that. I just don't think we'll end up shooting at each other over this. The Civil War was about so very much more. It was two different cultures fighting over control. We don't see that now. Not really. And some cheap grandstanding by the government isn't likely to change things. People already think the government is way out of control and they aren't surprised by a move like this. It will take a lot more to cause any real "blood in the streets" type problems.
