Please help me choose a revolver

I was not aware how easily the lock can be removed. That opens up a lot more options. I really like the 686 plus, other than the stainless finish. Does anyone know if a stainless gun can be refinished with a black finish?

S&W did a run of the 686 revolvers with a black finish so it can be done. Not sure how expensive it would be to have done.

Anything is possible with enough money. I'm sure you could get some company to melonite/nitride one, though I don't know what that would cost. It seems to be the finish of choice for SS firearm parts that want to be a black color.

The issues I have with the lock involve heavy bullets and scandium frames. Especially easy to reproduce with a 329 and 255 gr. loads. The S&Ws I have & love all have the locks removed. That renders them unsellable, but hey!

Lately I've become enamored with GP-100s. I plan to shoot a 6-inch at the ICORE World Championships in the retro/speedloader class in June. Gemini Custom has a Wiley Clapp 3-inch GP-100 of mine they're tuning up...I'm sorta half-way thinking of using it for next year's IDPA Back-Up Gun Nationals (shot a semi last year...was big fun).

Say no more...

The S&W k-frame is about as good as it gets. The Model 10 in 38spl or Model 13 in 357mag are outstanding and widely available on the used market at good prices. I have both and they handle/shoot exceptionally well. No locks, no worries.

I like a Tyler T-grip on mine.
Are you sure K-frame S&W is as good as it gets? Century Arms International has surplus MR-73s with 3" & 4" barrels. While I have never held one people say the only better revolver is bench made German Korth. I do remember MR-73 were substantially more expensive than Colt Pythons when they were imported into USA for commercial sales.

There are some rarer 627 8 shots out there with no locks.

Those are really rare (at least the 2.5" ones). I've been looking for one for a few years now, and the only ones that I've seen cost a lot of money.
